Quite A Journey...

Postby Fresh8 on Tue Jan 12, 2010 10:27 pm

... And so I get to this thread, which is for me and whoever else interested to celebrate 10,000 posts and 8 years (and counting) at the NBA Live Series Center.

I hope you find my ramble semi-coherent (unlike Mariah Carey the other night).

My experience with the NLSC...

Image
The reason I stumbled across NLSC

I remember stumbling across the NLSC back in late 2001- then downloading and attempting to install a Dennis Rodman cyberface. I joined the forums to try and join in the talk about basketball. My knowledge was very limited, the only thing I knew about was Yao Ming, the Lakers, and Andrew Gaze! That showed a lot with my posts as a 13 year old who had absolutely no idea (many would argue that I have not improved at all!). All of this coincided with me following the NBA on the internet via nba.com and any other online sports media available. As I played more and more basketball and asked my friend to record the NBA from his pay TV (When the Lakers played the Nets in the 2002 Finals).

NBA Live 2001 was the game I played for 2 years due to 2002 not coming onto PC. Thanks to Live 2001, Derek Fisher and Tyronn Lue rocked because I felt that they were 'all the rage'. NBA Live 2003 came out and I became even more involved on the forums. After basketball games/practices, I'd come home to check the forums for news/discussion on the NBA. I can remember downloading a mod that featured teams from each NBA Finals. That was really cool. My teammate and I used to play with our favorite teams from back in the day. He was a Magic fan and would use the Shaq-led Magic while I would us the 2001 LA Lakers.

2004-2005 was probably the peak of my activity. I was in the tail end of high school (so age 15-17). In 2006, I went to university and was still posting a lot. In those 3 years, I did a lot of posting in the Dynasty section as well as a lot of random shit (some embarrassing, some not); I think I could say that those who have seen me through the years may have seen me grow (or maybe not). I've seen a lot of posters come and go, and when I got back on in late 2008 - I was surprised that the forums seemed to be less active than it once was.

I've had my fair share of being flamed as well as getting into arguments. Without going into detail what happened, I remember creating a second account/identity in order for a 'fresh start'. That didn't work and I took a hiatus from posting for a year and a half. The hiatus was good for me though, as I was able to focus on my tertiary studies and made it into law school. I have two years to go with that!

Memories at NLSC...

Image
First memory I associate with NLSC...

There are a few things I still remember clearly because I associate these memories with posting or reading about it on NLSC.

I remember the Lakers-Kings Western Conference Finals in 2002 when Big Shot Bob hit that three pointer in Game 5 and then Bibby hit a clutch shot in Game 6. I remember Game 7 when the Lakers won in OT and I'm pretty sure I posted about it here on the NLSC... I remember Yao Ming being drafted and how I would hype up Franchise and the 'Ming Dynasty'... I remember the Lakers losing to the Spurs the next year and everyone posting pictures of Kobe crying... I remember debates of Kobe v T-Mac... I remember Kobe dropping 62 against an aging MJ... I remember Jordan's final All-Star game fairytale ending being ruined and KG winning MVP of that 2003 ASG... I remember the Lakers getting Mailman and Glove; then in ensuing days, Kobe's Colorado incident. I remember that whole season and eventually the Lakers making the Finals and me betting we would win. We lost and I had to change my avatar to one of those Detroit Pistons flag .gifs...

I remember myself posting with utmost optimism that Kwame Brown would prove not to be a bust after coming to the Lakers. He would be solid towards the end of the 05-06 season but ended up being more memorable for throwing cake... I remember coming home on a rainy day and being on MSN. Mark. told me Kobe just scored 81. It was another chance to post how amazing he was... I remember Jax agreeing to come back and coach the Lakers...

More recent memories would have to be the Celtics getting KG and Ray Allen. I remember saying that it would be really cool if LA would make the NBA Finals against Boston... When the Lakers got Pau Gasol; I realised that that 'dream' was a hugh chance of being reality... I remember when the Lakers lost Game 6 (The X saw me at the pub that day)... And I remember the Lakers winning the championship (granted I spent more time on facebook talking bout it than on NLSC)...

Image
Most recent basketball/NLSC memory... and probably one of the best so far

Now...

Well, here I am! The start of 2010 and racking up 10, 000 posts. As a person, I have grown up a lot. As a NLSC member, I think I have also developed. I've also gained a lot from the forums in terms of knowledge, experiences, and also friends. I played on The X's basketball team along with Dragon. It's a pretty small world and all three of us talk in the 'real world'. One of the older forum members pHLo and I are also good friends offline. One day, we're probably going to meet up for a beer or two and some basketball.

Being 21 years old and spending most of my online time on these forums from my early teens till now has been a pleasure. Thank you to the NLSC, it's actually a really good place to post. I've never kept interest in any forum for this long. It's a forum where I've been able to express and share and also learn about one of the loves of my life: basketball. It's been a forum where I have been able to share my own life experiences. It's also been a forum where I have been able to write and pretend to be a journalist (although I studied journalism, I am not looking at that as a career).

The reason there are no shoutouts here is because there aren't really a lot of people who I would give a shout out to. And I reckon a lot of people here probably don't even know who I am anyways!

However, thank you once again to all those who took the time to read!

Congrats on joining the 10,000 post club! There are no prizes, just wondering where all those hours went. ;) A quick glance at the memberlist shows that a couple of other people could be in line to break the 10k mark this year as well. Glad to hear that you've enjoyed your time here, hope you'll keep having a good time for a while yet.

Congrads Sit :chug: , that's yet another milestone for you recently (the posts and views in ALIB2) (Y)

damn, 8 years already, you've been around for quite some time  and in 2 years you'll have spent a decade on the NLSC :P

Congrads again and hopefully you'll keep ALIB2 going, that association is a living legend :applaud:

Yep, it is true, the Fighting Irish has even recruited from within the ranks of the NLSC, such is my innate scouting ability that I am able to use all forms of media & communication to further the team's great cause

Anyways, yep, you have been around a while & have gone through quite a few highs & lows, both IRL & on the forums. But good to have you back around reviving the dead Dynasty/Association forums for future readers/users. Good that the place is more stable these days, despite a few quality poster no longer being around.

Catch you on the flip side.

Grats sit dude. I remember several PMs talking with you when i got here early on when my grandpa was going through stuff. You seem like a good guy (sometimes hard to tell online :D) and other than you being a fan of the lakers: i've never had any problem with ya. Keep doing what you're doing and have a beer for me in celebration. :chug:

Congrats Sit, I'll join you in that club soon enough (Y)

Good read though, makes me wish I started posting earlier instead of lurking for years on end.

Thanks boss. (Y) Thank you for being a fair administrator on these forums. Looking back, I thought you would be gone from this by now but does not surprise me you are still here. That's not a bad thing though! Good to hear about your IT job in real life and good luck as well holding down your position here as forum master! Hopefully the NLSC community continues to thrive despite the game not being so good.

Thanks la. When I come to HK (maybe mid-year), will definitely hit you up to play bball!

Oh - definitely had a couple of highs and lows in the past few years. Good you seen me through some of them. Crazy times indeed. Very blessed to have met you as you're a great guy and shooter. (Y) As I've said, perhaps I will be playing for Irish again soon. :)

On the topic of dynasty/associations, you can thank Lamrock for my return as in my ALIB thread, he posted about where I went and asked me to finish the story. I felt compelled to be back; which is why I returned and steered clear of parts of the forum outside of the story sections - in a bid to stay out of trouble. It's great to see the Association section buzzing now!

Thanks man! I am confident enough to say that who I am online is pretty much who I am off-line. I think The X could vouch for that. Congrats on the 1999/2000 posts! :D

Thanks Jao! Whenever I see you, I think of Jing for some reason. And glad you enjoyed the read - was thinking of a good way to create a thread. Was going to just post one line in the milestone thread but I felt that the 10k club deserved a bit more effort. :)

And one last thing I forgot to add in my story up in the first post; I still remember finishing school for the year and it would always be in the same week as when NBA Live was released. I always saved my money up in my bank account and never touched it but every year on the last day of school, I would go to the bank and withdraw 100 bucks and go get myself a copy of NBA Live. The memories!

Congrats on the milestone, quite different milestone post compared to the other one's that I've read, but I liked it. I wanted to say something else, but can't remember what.

You're da man. Congratz from the German point guard stuck behind Jose "Imissnofreethrow" Calderon.

Definitely one of my favorite posters around here, you know that (be it the music, the dynasties or just the fact that you always have something to contribute). For the next 10k (Y)

Congrats on the 10K Sit! On the main forum I used to go to, the leading poster had 4500 posts, which I always thought was a ludicrous amount, but thanks, in a big part to you, I'm probably about a month away from hitting 5K.

Anyway, you're a fantastic dynasty maker who revitalized the craft and also a very rare Laker fan who isn't a douche. Stick around man. (Y)

Cheers man, although I doubt I will get another 10k! Where are you in Germany? When I visit my friend Florian, if you are (by coincidence) in the same city, I might even get to ball/drink with you too! :D

Not 1435, closer to 1500 than 1435 but it's fun to pay out on you. Keep it up (Y)

Always was a fan of yours since our 2004/05 days when Thierry was still a Gunner!

Yep he played the first half today. If Campbell signs then Senderos needs to leave, but I think we have enough defenders, what we need right now is a striker with van Persie out until late February, at least.
