Modding the Wii?

Postby Jackal on Tue Nov 11, 2008 3:58 am

So I got a Wii, because I was bored and had money.

Have you guys modded your Wii's?

Are we allowed to talk about this? Or is it against forum rules?

It's not illegal.

And to answer the OP, I haven't. I might at some point, since you can just softmod. Would like to see something like XBMC.

In that case, yes I have my Wii modded, and you wont regret doing so if your planning on doing it. That said, I hardly play the Wii any more, and spend over 90% of my gaming time on my 360.

Didn't think it was illegal either, hence the topic.

I already know how but was asking if others had done it.

I don't plan on keeping the Wii, it's more for my sister but she's busy rebuilding the house she just bought so I'm enjoying it over here at home. I do think that by modding it I can get more stuff to play which is always a plus.

I'm getting an xbox 360 soon I think, has a lot more games that interest me.

Uhm...what can you mod on the Wii? The whole thing? By modding I mean chip + "obtaining" games.

You can't do that with the PS3 and it's too costly for my blood. I'll get the Xbox 360.

Chip? This is the Wii, and like the Xbox, we don't need no stinkin' chip.

And there is homebrew. For playing DVDs, unsupported video formats and emulators.

Chip > Clip.

Unless you're referring to something different all together?

Boring. GC homebrews, blah to that.

Modchip is the way to go.

Um, a softmod allows everything a modchip does. And doesn't require nasty low quality electronics and shady characters.

From what I've read it doesn't allow you to play Wii game backups, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Just go on ebay and get a brand new 80GB motorstorm bundle PS3 for $350. It has so many more features than the 360 it's not even funny. Also you don't have to pay anything to go online. Unless you just want 360 exclusive games then I say go for it.

I've been playing a lot of PS3 at my friends apartment downstairs for the past few months and then bought one on ebay (40gig $240) specifically for Little Big Planet.

I am very pleased with myself for deciding to go with the 360 first and mostly in terms of online stuff. The way the PS3's XMB and Store is setup is just feckin weird to me. Same with buying stuff. Also, what the hell is with mandatory installs on a console. To play little big planet, I had to first update my PS3 to 2.42 (included on LBP disc, wasn't online yet) then the game had to install. Once I plugged into the net, another PS3 console update + install (mandatory) then a LBP update + install. Nevermind when I downloaded the NBA 09 The Inside demo I had to wait for it to download (some DL's wont let you download in background, like this one) and then it had to install....wtf this isnt supposed to be a computer. Wii's dont install, 360's dont install. With Wednesday's update including optional installs and the way you can choose to not update makes the 360 less "big brother" like. (wow, did I just say that about M$?)

If you are buying your first Next Gen console, go with the 360. If you hate it or have enough money, then buy a PS3

huh, that was kinda fanboyish and ranty, oh well, flame on my sons

Not really looking forward to any games, I don't play all that often.

Which makes me wonder why I bought the Wii in the first place...I played it for two days a lot and now it's gathering dust next to the PS2.
