What kind of help does he expect? That someone will give him some magic program on how to get good with a guitar? It IS possible to learn it by yourself, but you have to be somehow related to music. You have to know HOW to do it. If you have A LOT of patience, you can find some book or internet page that would explain positions of hands, touching of strings and ect, but that's VERY hard.
On the other hand, if you ain't going "pro" with this, you might try to make some sound by your own. But I repeat, this will take much much time, like learning to play basketball for instance.
For a newbie, you might try to find some cheap guitar on ebay or smth. and just try to get somewhere, if you like it and stuff and get better, you might consider finding a more expensive and better guitar.
