Tips For New Guitarist?

I listen to a lot of rock/punk music and I've become interested in playing guitar, but I don't really know where to start looking for a good model. Suggestions on good models or price ranges on a basic but not cheapo "break in a month" type guitar brands?

Also, how should I go about doing the whole self-teach thing?

If you want a nice guitar, you will have to pay MUCH. Esspecially in the US. But if you're totally new at this, maybe a cheap "break in a month" would be even better.

What kind of help does he expect? That someone will give him some magic program on how to get good with a guitar? It IS possible to learn it by yourself, but you have to be somehow related to music. You have to know HOW to do it. If you have A LOT of patience, you can find some book or internet page that would explain positions of hands, touching of strings and ect, but that's VERY hard.
On the other hand, if you ain't going "pro" with this, you might try to make some sound by your own. But I repeat, this will take much much time, like learning to play basketball for instance.

For a newbie, you might try to find some cheap guitar on ebay or smth. and just try to get somewhere, if you like it and stuff and get better, you might consider finding a more expensive and better guitar.

Not a magic program, more like a brand of books or a website or something. Just looking for an acoustic guitar that's good enough to occupy my free time and give me a sort of "project" to work on.

Personally I'd start with an electric, purely because playing acoustic fucking hurts and you need to screw up your fingertips just to be able to play without pain. Either way though, there'd be plenty out there if you look around.

You know what? I did give him advice. I told him to ignore a dipshit's comments and that self-teaching isn't impossible. Even though I do not play guitar I do know a ton about music and instruments and positive encouragement is always helpful. Your 'advice' is terrible. Trying to make yourself seem better than someone else by putting them down with derogatory comments would suggest to me that YOU are the one with the "serious issues".

I'll skip all the shit in this thread and answer the dude's question. I don't play guitar, but my brother does. The best thing I can tell you is to find a local music store where you can go in and talk to somebody. I would recommend getting an acoustic first just because it's cheaper (you don't need an amp, cables, etc.), and that way if you find out you don't like playing the guitar, you didn't spend money on an expensive guitar for nothing. If you're really up for self-teaching, ask the guy in the store what you'll need. The reason stores have floor people is to answer your questions.

Acoustic is good too because kind of using what Jae said, you actually WILL get calloused really good, and electric would be uber easy on your fingers after that. Also acoustic can be more adabtable (can be played on its own or electrified if you want) and goes better with Banjo.

To start, I would suggest trying to start learning some basic chords, and pick a few songs you like and just learn to strum to them. An excellent one to try would be Rockin in the Free World by Neil Young. It sounds good and pumps you up, but is pretty straightforward.
