The mysterious $1 problem

Postby MaD_hAND1e on Sat May 14, 2005 11:00 am

3 people go to a hotel

At the counter, the assistant charges them $30 in total, each person pays $10.

Later that day, the manager decides to put a $5 discount on the price, so that it costs $25.

The assistant is to return $5 to the 3 people, but he sneakily takes $2 for himself, leaving $3 for the 3 people.

Each of the 3 people recieves $1 of the $3, and therefore, they are each paying $10 - $1 = $9

but wait..... $9 x $3 = $27... add on the $2 took = $29.. where did that $1 go?????

saw this in an email... it looks a bit suspicious to me.. but i still can't figure how this extra $1 came to be.

It has something to do with that 9$ times 3$...I don't think you need that...hold on give me a few minutes and I'll have it.

they don't pay $9 per. its $30 minus 7 [the discount and stolen= 23/3= 7.666666666666666666666667

The owner keeps 25$ and 2$ from the three guys, so they actually pay 27 $ in total, the actual discount being 3$, meaning the pay 27/3=9$ each

This question isn't too hard, it's just designed to be confusing in the wording.

Think of it this way: lets pretend he had originally decided to make the price 27$ (instead of 25$). That would mean it is a 3$ discount. So he would give them back the 3$, they'd split it up, 9 x 3 = 27. That makes perfect sense, right?

So now, the tricky part of the wording is where they go "but 27 + 2 is 30, right?" this is the part that makes it confusing. If you think about it, the difference between the 27$ and 25$ discounts is 2$.... the difference between 5$ savings and 3$ savings is 2$.... and the amount that he stole is 2$. So indeed it does add up, you just need to go 9 x 3= 27 but minus 2 = 25, which is the discount price he offered.

Does that explanation make sense?

EDIT: I left the compy a while while posting, LOL three posts in the time it took me to get this one out. My explanation is still the longest (and therefore best) though :P

Both my parents are dead; I have no friends except those on the internet... thanks for belittling the little victory I had achieved for the day. Thanks a lot man.

And what 11 year old are you talking about? Because if you're referring to yourself you got the way wrong answer...

Dweaver, I actually appreciate your seemingly sincere sympathy towards my potentially sad situation (alliteration!) but yeah these guys are totally right, that stuff was blatant lying :D

Just trying to see if I could get a rise out of that asshole, maybe if he has a concience or whatever. :P But yeah, thanks Dweaver :)

And yeah man, hot gr 11's, maybe special payment I wish!!! :D

He was referring to the fact that he answered the question previously (and he is 11 or so) albeit not in as much detail.
