Which one should I buy: Xbox or PS2 ?

Postby Tuomas on Sat Jun 12, 2004 6:21 pm

I have realized that I won't be able to quit my gaming hobby for a long time, so I'm facing a big problem. My crappy PC.

So to start the topic, here are my specs:

Intel Pentium II(I?) 533/133mhz
320 mb memory
68.5 gt hard drive
Video card: Asus Geforce 5200FX
.... and something like that.

So apparently, if I want to keep buying new games, I will need to update my pc even more. At least the processor and more memory. I have already bought more memory, more harddrive space, new speakers and a video card. The original system gets 4 years old this year.

So if I decide to buy a new processor and more memory, it'll take about 300-400€. And I came up with a new idea; with that money I could buy a Playstation 2, a couple of games and maybe some accessories for it.
My system would get old anyways after the update... but Playstation wouldn't.

I'm tired of playing games with low graphics, always turning the details to minimum (NBA Live 2004), Hell, I don't even remember how a game looks like with detailed maxed out. The last time was either with NHL 2000 or NHL 95.

I also have to think about the future. If I decide to buy a new processor, what about after 2-3 years? I will have to buy a whole new pc (because all the rest old stuff in my pc) which will cost me the price of 3-5 new PS's. And I'm soon facing life in the university so I would save money if buying a ps. I will get very poor so that would be a saving.

I have listed here some pros and cons for buying a Playstation (that are from my point of view).

(Y) More games: You can't argue with me that PS has more games than PC. The game industry today concentrates more on the consoles than PC. Even mega games like NBA Live and GTA are straight conversions from the consoles  the games don't often use PCs advantages which is
+EA:s dominance in bball games. PS2 has NBA2k series :)

(Y) Updating: What updating? PS needs no updating.

(Y) Price

(Y) DVD-player: Yea, this would be very useful for me when I move out. I wouldn't need to buy an external DVD player.

(N) Games' price: Yea, PS games cost 10-15€ more that new pc games.

(N) Graphics: PS2 looses when comparing graphics to pc. But since I don't know how new games look full detail, that doesn't really matter to me. At least I know that they look better than on my pc and that's enough for me.

And don't try to convince me what else you can do with a pc, my current pc is good enough for internet, photoshop and all windows applications. I would only use PS2 for gaming and DVD, that my pc is not good enough for.

I would like to hear your opinions and suggestions before I make my decision.
Also, if you have some info on the following questions, please answer to them as well.

1. Are there any plans for NBA Street 3 ?

2. Are there any plans for Playstation 3?

3. IS GTA SA really coming out for PC?

Thanks for your time and concern

I wil not buy an xbox

1. It's more expensive
2. Less games
3. It's microsoft

It will be either a new processor or ps2 for me.

An on the second thought, how much better graphics does xbox have comparing to ps2? Not much I guess :?

u kiddin?

I live in Finland. our summer lasts two months. +I need to play  besides, ps2 costs only 150-175 €, not too much (compared to a pc) and besides, when ps3 comes out, it will cost MUCH more...

and besides, you can spend your whole life waiting for the newer version, same with computers. they keep getting better all the time so it's useless to wait.

I got my silver playstation for free, with a mobile phone for a 2 year contract with T-Mobile.

Humm, it's pretty much upto you what you wanna do, I would go with upgrading the PC, seriously, first time I dont have Live for PC and it kills me. PC > Others.

If you don't want to wait two years, do what others are doing, buy a playstation 2, make use of it...just before release sell it to some moronic 5 year old. Voila, enough cash for a PS 3. (Ofcourse you'll have to add some money, but not as much as buying a new one.)

X-Box > PS2.

Buy a PS2. That was the exact same reasoning I came to when I bought mine. If I bought a PC 2 years ago instead of a PS2, it would be really slow and need to be updated and stuff. Plus there is more games.

I have already decided to buy a console, but now it's between xbox and ps2.
Xbox has more advantages and now they are almost evenly priced here.

I'm a bit leaning towards xbox. Since it's more powerful and such. And don't whine about the controller, I will buy a new one with it if I buy it. (Y)

Please vote in the poll and add your opinions on which one to buy.

we'll i think there are better exclusive games on the ps2 while the xbox has better hardware...

so i think u should base your decision on the exclusive games on each console. which games you really wana play... ps2 has better more exclusive games that i like a console fps fan i suggest you pick the xbox though as it has the halo games and doom 3 is gonna come out on xbox. while ps2 has all the good fighting games and a lot of action adventure games.

I don't play fps like doom.
I play sports games (nba, nhl) and of course gta and such. but mainly sports games.

I don't think that the decision will base on the # of games, but on the price and the hardware.

xbox without a do0ubt. There is really no comparison. My playstation has been collecting dust ever since I bought an Xbox. Trust me, get the Xbox, it's far more advanced and better.

X-Box.

To Homer:

The T-Mobile of Holland has alot of offers like these. The deal was simple: A Sony Ericcson phone + a Silver Edition Playstation 2 + 2 controllers for a two year contract of 150 minutes per month. It comes to like 23 or 30 Euros. They make back their money, but none the less, it's a good deal. The phone isn't one of the most expensive phones, that's for sure. But I had just gotten here, needed a phone a.s.a.p. so it was a good deal at the right time. It's a light phone, pretty small. Did the job at the time. Since then I've bought a Nokia 8803 or something like that, I'm not too sure. All I had to do was take out the sim card from one phone and pop it into the new phone. Aah, I love technology.

I don't think I'll be selling my PS2. Not many silver ones if I'm correct. :)

I figure you're going to need a computer anyways for the internet, word processing etc. so why not sink some extra money into it and use it for everything. Plus you can patch and the controllers are a lot better.

Damn i'm the only one that voted for PS2.
But I voted for Playstation cuz they seems to have more games, better controlls and more experience in the market (y)

Xbox.

I now kinda regret buying a ps2. The controller on Xbox sucks, but you will get used to it after a while. Plus, there is different kinds you can buy. It looks alot better, actually has use for it's hard drive, has a DVD player, and can hold MP3's.

Get PS2 if want:
Dont want to pay to play online
Grand Theft Auto(I heard GTA:SA wont be coming out for XBOX and PC)
If all your friends have PS2 and you borrow games from them
More games

Get XBox if you want:
Better graphics
If all your friends have XBox and you borrow games from them
Dont want to buy a memory card to save games
Faster load times

I got PS2 because I borrow games from my friends and I dont want to pay to play online
