Aussieland to add two new genders?

Postby benji on Tue Dec 09, 2008 1:50 pm

Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission pushes for third 'intersex' gender
THE Federal Government's human rights arm plans to invent a new official status called "intersex" adding it to male and female as a legally recognised gender.

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission wants people to be able to change their gender on their passports and driving licences even if they do not undergo surgery.

And transgender lobby groups say that even this does not go far enough and are demanding a fourth legal gender called "other" for people who feel like their gender is indefinable or changes from day to day.

Now we know why Diddy wants to move there, amirite?

Surely, you jest. Not with you pumping out the quality material like seen above. A good old fashioned rib-tickler.

Any thoughts on things that aren't me? Maybe the topic of the thread?

What is the point? It won't get passed. It's like having a thread on how many 3's Shaq will hit this season.

How do you know it will not come to be? This is an ever growing movement throughout the West.

Irregardless, you think its a good idea? Bad idea? To allow people to define their gender by what they think they truly are, in order to help alleviate discrimination. The fourth "other" might be too far, but what about "intersex"?

What the fuck is an intersex? Is it Pat from Saturday Night Live?

People rarely define what they are called. White people never decided they were to be called white. Black people never decided they were to be called black. Indians never decided to be called Indians, even though they aren't from India. Lets just add more options to make them more confused. "Am I male today, or other? I'm not sure."

Just another added layer of division amongst people. Humans sure as hell love to categorize, don't they?

Seems a bit extreme to me, though in all fairness not being one of those people who feels discriminated against by having to simply choose between Male and Female when filling out a form I can't identify with their desire for the change to happen. If adding those options will appease those groups it's no skin off my nose, it only means a couple of new options under sections of forms where I only ever have one answer anyway.

This probably will help alleviate discrimination at the institutional level, but to me, I don't think we should define people by gender anyway.

How so? When it comes to public bathrooms, medical profiles and the like, noting the simple biological attribute of gender seems appropriate enough.

Discrimination of what?

You're either male or female, that's the way it is. I can't understand why some people are not able to just get over it. Jesus Christ, I mean, if you wanna be a transsexual fine by me, nobody's denying you that, but you have to accept the fact that you're still the gender you were when you were born and you can't change that.

This is ridiculous. "Intersex"? "Other gender"? You have got to be fucking kidding me...

So after sex reassignment surgery they should still go to the same bathroom as how they were born? Should still be considered the sex they were born?

I don't give a shit which bathroom they use. I always use the ladies' bathroom at school because, differently from what happens at the men's bathroom, people don't piss on the floor or are constantly smoking joints in it. My point is, no matter what bathroom they use, no matter what surgery they undergo, if they had a penis when they were born, they are and they will always be men. There's no way around it, it's the way it is and they have to get over it.

I would suggest that that's the discrimination those groups are referring to. I agree that sex reassignment surgery is still limited in its ability to truly change a person's gender but it's as close as those people are likely to ever get to changing their biological gender. If someone who is born a man undergoes the surgery and is legally female and outwardly looks like a woman, I'm guessing they probably don't want to be seen going into the men's bathroom. I don't have any true insight into the matter and I'm no expert on psychology to boot, but I'd suggest it's not something people can "get over".

See, that's a major problem here because of the sue-happy culture. You step foot in the wrong bathroom and you're going to have legal problems here. If not criminal, then certainly civil.

Guys don't freak out or care if a woman is using their bathroom. But women certainly care if a guy or "transitioning" woman does. As do lawyers.

And people get fired for changing their sex and stuff. That's why these "anti-discrimination" efforts are made.
My point is, no matter what bathroom they use, no matter what surgery they undergo, if they had a penis when they were born, they are and they will always be men. There's no way around it, it's the way it is and they have to get over it.

But the physical stuff is irrelevant in their argument. Their point is that gender is socially constructed and you can feel born the wrong gender. You may be born male, but feel all your life you're really a female. They reject the idea that gender is tied to physical characteristics.

Sorry for the lateness of this reply...

But what is your opinion of this, Benji? All you do is probe other peoples opinions and statements without offering one of your own. This isn't a TV show and you're not the host.

As for the topic, it won't get passed because for every one in favour of this, there is a thousand who think it's absurd. Politicians are all about popularity, even the left wingers.

And the bathroom argument (if it's even that) is even more ridiculous. Wait is this where I make a lame joke about Diddy wanting to move to Australia?
