2008 so far

Postby Andrew on Wed Jul 02, 2008 1:39 pm

So, we're past the halfway point for the year 2008 AD. What kind of year has it been for you?

I've had a somewhat eventful six months. I was made redundant earlier as the company I worked for was losing money (the perils of working for a small business in the world of IT) so I've decided to start my own computer repair business as a sole trader. I'm starting out small but hoping to make it a success while I continue to keep my eyes and ears open for other opportunities should things not pan out.

I also got to travel overseas again for another NBA Live Community Event (for anyone who's wondering, I still can't post the reports yet). It's a long flight there and back for just a few days but it's definitely worth it. Aside from getting a sneak peek at the game before the rest of the public and the content it allows us to provide on the NLSC, I always enjoy the camraderie with the other guys at the event. I've heard stories of community events where people haven't been so friendly with one another, so it's great that we've never run into that problem with the NBA Live events.

As you can probably tell from some of my nostalgic threads and in particular my milestone thread where we talked about the signs you're getting older, the realisation that I'm getting older - even if I'm still quite young at 23, going on 24 in October - is really starting to set in with old classmates getting married or having kids. Two of my best friends are getting married in September in fact, where I'll have the honour of being one of the groomsmen. We often marvel how it's been six years since we finished high school, because if you'll pardon the cliche it only seems like yesterday.

The most jarring thing that has happened this year is that one of my oldest friends whom I grew up with and was a couple of years younger than me hung himself back in February which was a huge shock to everyone who knew him, because he was the last person any of us would have expected to take his own life. It still feels very surreal. It certainly put things in perspective though. The day I found out about it, I was pissed off at Subway as they'd salted my sub even though I'd asked for no salt (the second time it had happened in a short span of time) and I'd let it slide because I hate being "that guy" when it comes to being a customer. Needless to say when I heard the news, Subway messing up an order didn't seem worth, well, a grain of salt.

So, for me 2008 has had its ups and downs to say the least. I'm hoping for more ups in the next six months.

2008 was a very busy year for me.. I've had a lot going on, IGCSEs, organising the school's events.. and one which is the most promising for me, patching CF :D

I've joined NLSC at the beginning of the year and I must say that I've made the right decision. I've never been to any forum like this, not to mention that they are not about Live. NLSC is a great community and it's been like a third home for me. Not many interesting thing has happened to me so far, but I'm just happy to be part of the community and being able to share my patch with others. I think it's pretty safe to say that joining NLSC was the best thing that happened to me so far this year. I've only been here for 6 months, but I feel so welcome and warm here. And I look to stay here until EA stop making NBA Live! ;)

I started off by being rejected from UMass Lowell, not for grades, but because I couldn't get loans because of my credit (pretty much I had no credit at all). And after that BS I pretty much stared at NBA Live files saying to myself "I really should do something for Live, it will take my mind off this" ... never happened.

There was talk of me moving out and up to Vermont near my girlfriend so she could keep her good job and live together, but that was soon replaced by false wishes of running off to (Northern and slightly cheaper) California together to both work for a year then find schools.

After reality bitch slapped me (aint got no money) I found a job ad for a Civil Engineering Technician. After nailing the interview (besides wearing sneakers) I got the job which has paid for my apartment with my girlfriend which is walking distance from work, my new computer, HDTV, and making this apartment fully furnished.

Besides going in for 5:30 this morning to cover someone else's ass, I've been surprisingly upbeat and happy over all of this with minimal stress.

Oh and also playtesting for Harmonix (makers of Rock Band and the newly announced Rock Band 2) last week and tomorrow is just amazing in it's own right.
Opinions are my own.

It's been a great year so far. I found a girlfriend finally. Well, not that I was actually looking for a girl, I think that is something you should just let destiny do. But I think I found the right girl which is very important for me. (First girlfriend with 19 seems kind of nerdish, too, but I just wanted to find the right one.

Thus I had a lot of fun and experiences with my girl in the last five months and I really love her.

Furthermore I graduated from school (I made my Abitur, which allows me to study @University). Suprisingly I did very well in the last exams and was able to get a 2.3 Abitur ... which is a "B" overseas I think.
So after 14 years of school (I repeated class one time ^^) I am finally done with it. Now I have to absolve my civilian service since I decided to refuse military service.
I am glad that I found a job at a small clinic which is only 5 minutes within walking distance. I will be a caretaker which is very good since I did not want to have contact to sick persons ^^. Now I have 2 months left with simply nothing to do but chill. That is great. I work at the supermarket two days a week just to earn some money. The soccer season will start in August so we will start with our training programme tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. Just great :)

Bah, I'm 22 and still... nevermind.

So far 2008 has been amazing, graduated college with a degree in Engineering, got back to teach what I learned from them after 3 months of effin' job hunting, still adjusting to this kind of lifestyle though.

Pretty crappy so far because I'm nowhere near where I should be professionally, stuck in a menial job for now, and it's getting hard to pay the goddamn bills. I seem to dwell in laziness, I don't work out anymore, barely look for a better job. Frustrating stuff so far...
Other than that, finally rented an actual house with my wife, which is a welcomed change, adopted a cat, upgraded my PC like I wanted, bought a big HD TV,...Mostly materialistic stuff :?

nothing much for the past six months..
i started the year looking for a job w/o success, but after three months i finally found one, so right now i'm spending my life doing memos for the boss and going to the bank depositing money for the company. so it's pretty much boring. hope i could get back to college this coming semester.

yeah man i really need to start working on my credit. at 22, i have NO credit history so i don't wanna fuck myself later.

yes, come here to California. that would be sweet. not discounting my bias for the West coast/so cal over annoying loud people (ahem, Tommy Heinsohn) from New England.

did you test Rock Band 2?

well, i lost my nevermind at 21. wasn't bad before because you couldn't really know what you were missing out on. but then afterwards it sucks because you get withdrawals worse than crack addicts. so it's not that much better on this side. i always was worried about it, but after your time comes, it's not such a big deal. so it's not really a big deal to begin with imo

2008 so far? Jesus do i even need to start?
I started off the year on academic probation due to a lack of focus on school 1st semester (partially due to my grandfather dying, partially due to me partying every other night). I sucked it up and got through it and did manage to graduate on time in May (so thats good i guess). Our family dog (had her 15 years) got put down a couple months ago, my grandmother needs surgery now (if you ask the doc it would be NOW; which also results in here moving in with me and my parents). My shoulders have sucked all year and when I got around to the track season I have no power in my push anymore. Due to having no power left, at US Trials for Beijing, I was handed my ass and am NOT going to the Olympics that I've been practicing for for the past 6 years. In a few weeks i move out of my own place and back with my parents. And lets not even talking about getting "nevermind"

But i did want to make a point about "nevermind" It sucks when it's someone you're with just to get it. Wait for the right girl (or guy as the case may be). It's exponentially better.

It's been wild, school drove me mad and a summer vacation came to save me, but no I'm bored. Got involved in greeks, wondering if i should do it again. Slept too much/too irregular of a sleeping schedule, so need more balance and organization.

Oh! and yes, Asian Dramas.

2008 has been a good year for me so far. I got my grades back on track, and I'm no longer headed towards academic ineligibility. It has also been a year full of real life learning as well. I feel like I have grown a lot in a short span of time. I've met a lot of new people and learned how to interact with different types. I've also managed to stay in a committed relationship... somehow, which has grown into something special, I think.
