The Year of the Corner

Revis leads a strong cornerback class

Last year, a total of ten cornerbacks were drafted on the first day of the draft. This year, there could be two times as many drafted on the first day. The real amazing thing about this years draft though, is the depth of the corners. When you have guys like C.J. Gaddis and Reggie Lewis who could easily be good NFL players, going on the second day, you know its a special draft for corners. This year will be a perfect chance for a NFL teams struggling secondary, to cash in.

Cornerbacks are one of the toughest positions to play in the NFL. It is rare to find a true shutdown corner in today's game. But, this year, you could find at least four of them who can make pro-bowls in their careers. In my opinion, Darrelle Revis, Leon Hall, Aaron Ross, and Chris Houston all have the tools to be a true shutdown corner in the NFL. While Revis and Ross depend on phyiscal covering, Hall and Houston have the natural talent at the position. Don't get me wrong, Revis and Ross are both amazing corners, but I believe that their other attributes are better than their pure covering skills. They both have size and good strength to overpower bigger receivers.

Darrelle Revis has great size for the position at 6' 190, and is very good in covering receivers with his phyiscal ability. He looks very good in all coverages he is assigned to. Aaron Ross is another guy who has prototypical size for the position. The accolade that I really like about him is that he is quicker than a guy like Revis or Hughes. The only negative I noticed about Ross is that he gives up too many big plays and tries to gamble to much. Leon Hall is a guy who had a great season, but was overshadowed a bit by his performance against Dwayne Jarrett. He really keeps his body in shape well and has good hands. Chris Houston was not known about much by anyone before the season. That all changed during the year when people began to notice his great size, speed, and strength. He is not known to be a guy who gets a bunch of interceptions though as he only had three in his career. Daymeion Hughes has seen his stock drop a little after measuring in four inches below his rumored 6'2" height. Still, he posses the skills to play a good man-to-man in the NFL. He is not very fast and that could hurt him on deep coverage. Jonathan Wade is a guy I thought had a good Senior Bowl. He is fast and has good hands, but the questions about his work-ethic are a factor. Josh Wilson might be the fastest guy in the whole draft. He is a little shorter than you would like, but he jumps well and goes to the ball when it's thrown. Tanard Jackson is a very versitile player who can be used at either safety or corner. He is physical, knows how to break in and make tackles in the backfield, and plays the zone very well. Travarous Bain is a major sleeper this year. He can cover very well but did not tend to get noticed by many people as he played for Hampton. At the Shrine Game, he also showed his ability to tackle, which was his only real weakness. Look for his name to be called earlier than you expect. A.J. Davis is a guy who is kind of under the radar. Good cover 2 guy, but he needs to show he is more physical in one-on-one coverage.

The Lions need to draft one of these guys. Fernando Bryant hasn't done anything since coming to Detroit except get hurt. We are in serious need of a corner to play opposite of Dre.
