The 50's was an interesting time. Women were pretty much controlled by market forces because they are the ones with buying power. What's more interesting was most of these market forces were cleaning and cooking stuff.

In case anyone's wondering about whether the "excerpt" is real or not, Snopes maintains that in all likelihood it's fake but it certainly does represent old fashioned attitudes with certain exaggerations (ie the omission of certain aspects of the roles and responsibilities women assumed in the 50s) used to demonstrate the differing attitudes in today's society.

Of course, if the excerpt is real then there might be some truth to this modern publication as well, now that attitudes towards gender roles have changed. ;)
