Yahoo! Geocities does not allow remote linking to images, thus they do not show up when you use the IMG tags.

Indeed. Most of the free web hosts are enforcing restrictions on remote linking and bandwidth these days.

He's probably renamed the image files so that they are txt files. Any links to image files will not work. I haven't had to deal with Geocities for some time, you'd have to ask Gary Allen (I believe that's his site) about it.
