Not only have their been graphical changes, but gameplay as well... which is logical I suppose so that makes me an idiot.

There's a lot more focus on realism these days, not only in sports sims but in gaming concepts. Genres such as platform and adventure games are all but dead these days, with classics like the original Mario Bros. games and LucasArts' wide range of point-and-click adventure games like Monkey Island are a thing of the past. There used to be a lot more fantasy involved in video games whereas now it's more about emulating real life events. Not necessarily a bad thing but it has perhaps made us more critical of the games we play and reduced the range of video games on the market somewhat.

The advancement of technology has a lot to do with it though. As hardware allows developers to make games look much more true to life, the same kind of realism is expected from the gameplay as well.

I think those older games are much more fun to play, much more addictive than the games nowadays even though they looked shit.

I feel the same way at times. I think gameplay/concepts have been pushed aside in favour of making the game look impressive. Remaking some of those old games/reviving some of the genres with today's graphics and such wouldn't be a bad idea. Sid Meier and co did a fantastic job resurrecting Pirates! with their release a couple of years ago. Minimal features from the original are missing, nearly all of them inconsequential or have been replaced by something better and the new features are all welcome upgrades.

People can say all they want to about how games were better back in the day, but there is no way they are as fun for the same lenght as games these days. The lasting ability of old games would now last no longer than a few hours for a huge majority of people.

Good to see how much it has progressed though, its funny to see what games used to be like

Actually that's the exact point we were making, that the older games had more focus on gameplay and lastability, were more addictive and could stand up despite not being as graphically advanced as some of today's offerings. The fact that some old games still remain popular is a testament to that point of view.

are we talking older games such as in Duke Nukem (before 3d) or Atari games?

I still think that new games have more lastability, even if it is just with multiplayer

An argument could be made for some of the really old games, but I personally was referring to the more advanced games; the Leisure Suit Larrys, Pirates, Civilisation, Sim City, LucasArts adventure games and so on.

I would still play Double Dribble (or NBA Jam) over Live 06.

Punch-Out is more fun that Fight Night 3. Fight Night's controls are horrendous!

Did you play the 3rd installment? I ask cuz the first 2 were text based so that turned many ppl off from it.

Also, my addiction to it was kinda predictable cuz I am a fan of Football Manger and Championship Manager. I played FIFA Manager alot but I dont really enjoy it as much any more.
