3G Phones

Can someone tell me the truth about this,
I was talking to my friend the other week and he was telling me that 3G phones arent compatible with pre-paid sim cards, you have to be on a plan.
Is this true? Some of those 3G phones are noooooice

I have a 3G phone, it's prepaid to Three but if you try and use another sim in it it asks for some sort of password. The only way you can unlock it is to spend a certain amount of money on credit, or to have it for 6 months or something then you've got to call them and get them unlocked. Doing that is a painful experience as most of the call centers are in India.

ive got an optus prepaid sim if i wanted to get it to work what would i have to do

You'd have to spend like $300 on credit or wait around 6 months.
