Anyone have a good site to buy guitars?

im thinking of learning how to play the guitar by myself (heard from friends theres sites that teach you, no need for a teacher) and need sites for guitars (obviously). I dont want an electric one because I'm just starting out and they are expensive. Preferably, I want one between 100-175. Thanks in advance .

If you want to learn songs on the guitar, the place to do it is http://mysongbook.com/hp-home.htm. You need a program called Guitar Pro... you download files from this site and the program plays the song to you, and it shows you where to put your fingers on the fret board. It helped my development anyway. I'm pretty much in love with the program, because it serves as a fantastic writing tool too.

Hehe yeah.. i got gp5 too... There are some cool features but i thought the real sounds would be better... they aren't recorded well the guitar is too reverby and the drums just sound shit. I just use the MIDI for gp5 drums.

I don't know what the prices are like in in Canananada, but i bought my first guitar for $390 AUS (That'd be like $220 US??)... it was packaged with an amp.

If you're not going electric at all, you don't have to worry about an amp, or a pickup. That should save some $.

I'm not a guitar player myself, but I can make a general recommendation. Spend as much as you're willing to spend to get a good instrument. I'm not saying to spend >1000$ on something you may or may not use. But you don't want to get something cheap, that will deter you from playing the instrument. IE, you want the only thing in the way to be you. It would be a shame to say you got turned off of guitar because you had a shitty guitar.

Buy something that sounds good and something you like to play on. I'd recommend perusing local music stores first to get a feel for things. Ask for recommendations in person too. There is no such thing as too much research.

Hey drunkmofo, you should probably consider not purchasing a guitar over the internet. Consider going to a local guitar shop, or if you really need to, you might want to go to Toronto. Purchase a guitar pack for your very first, since you dont want to dish too much money on youre first guitar. Depending on your taste, you can opt for a Les Paul Copy (Epiphone) or a Stratocaster, as they both come in very affordable packs. One of my friends purchased an Epiphone Les Paul from a pack, and he recommends it a lot. Guitar packs provide you with most of the tools you'll need in the first years of your guitar playing. Unless you want to play country music , I'd advise an electric. If you purchase an acoustic and find out you can't play anything by your favorite band, its going to discourage you, and probably prevent you from enjoying the experiance.

For the epiphone les paul line.. only go for the classic/standard/custom .. the lp100 of the epiphone like bites ass.. terrible tone, bolt on neck.. its basically a toy..

But if you get the Classic (which i have) you have a set neck (more sustain) and fatter tone which it is famous for..

Or you can get the stratocaster, a made in mexico one is awesome value at probably around 500 or so us? :S might be cheaper then that actually, but it rivals the us made ones.. well comes close

Personally.. I have a Fender Stratocaster, 94' Epiphone Les Paul Classic , 1984' Kramer .. Fender DG-5 acoustic ( cost me 300 or so aussie... sounds great..) . and a handful of guitar pedals and amp..

Oh yeah, the one on Bank street? The store's okay, but they're really good at repairing stringed instruments. (ie, my violin) In Ottawa, the best place for a guitar shop is Steve's hands down. They've got the best selection, bar none.

you have a good point there, metalhead. going to a local shop would benefit me more as they would give me some advice on what to get. At the moment, i think i wont be going for a electric one yet because its less expensive .

Definitely go to a store... or many stores. Get some advice and opinions from different stores and make a decision from there. If you can make it into Toronto, try to find a store called the 12th Fret. It's supposed to be amazing.

Metalhead, unfortunately I've never been to Steve's. I've heard some good things about it though, like they throw in a lot of stuff when you buy a guitar and stuff.
I was thinking about what you said about going electric to play the bands you like. Well, you can play electric stuff on the acoustic! (except maybe solos that are more the left hand.) Hell, I play a ton of rock stuff on my banjo! (Which Jona and Cyanide (I think) can confirm!!! )

Yeah, when I bought my wah pedal for my bass there, they threw in a lot of free stuff. The dude in the back broght out this bag as large as a garbage bag, and grabbed a handful of picks, and just plopped them on the table. I think my friends shit themselves laughing. My friend also got a similar treatment when he bought a guitar there.

And DrunkMofo, I was just saying, its still your preference, its just that a lot of my friends who picked up an acoustic, never took any lessons, and ended up being bored with it, gave it up. And actually, sometimes electrics come cheaper than acoustics.

Thanks! Usually the only complements I get on my midis are from family members and jealous music class mates.

My banjo playing has increased ten-fold since anyone but my parents and bro have heard it. I reached 160bpm today... probably doesn't mean anything to anyone but I was playing like the pro's pretty much. Once I perfect it a little more, maybe I'll cut a track.
