Coaching u/12's

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

Realizing on the fly that girls should not cover their groin, they should cover their chest,

Ah, so that's why people do that (not just girls either, I like to do it too :cheeky: ).

I've coached 11/12 and 13/14 for the past two years along with my dad (I need 40 hours of community service to graduate from high school  ) and the most basic thing is to let them have fun, even if it means giving away half the time to jack half court shots. These are the things we taught them, and they seemed to understand all of them:

- Picks --> three ways to use a pick: go around and drive, go around and stop for a shot (if the defender goes below the pick) or go around and then pass to the guy rolling off the pick.
- Lay-ups
- Boxing out --> split them in pairs, put one on D, one on O, then shoot and tell the guy on D to box out the dude on O, make it a game to 10 or something.
- Passing --> the weave worked for me. :|
- Fakes --> important here, teach them ball fakes and head fakes early. Besides it's fun for them, get them to make a fake with you guarding them and really fall for it.
- Shooting --> play shooting games like around-the-world
- How to play good defense (where to be)
- Court spacing --> this is something my dad really stresses; he teaches there are 5 'circles' on the court (dividing the court into 5 areas) and that there should only ever be one guy per circle. To run the offense, you just run to another guy's circle, forcing him to go to someone else's and so on. It really helps to get them to stay spread out and to keep moving.

And the most important thing:
- Don't let them dribble into a corner.

And I'm going to see them in Toronto!
