I have always wondered...

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

I have always wondered...

Postby hipn on Tue Feb 21, 2006 7:00 am

First, back in the day, TVs did not exist, only radios and stuff. People would go outisde and enjoy themselves, playign games and being more active. People would go watch the game at the stadiums and everthing.

Then TV was invented and people started saying home and watchign the games, and starting to spend more time at hoem watching TV than hanging out and enjoyng time with family (outside of home) and friends.

Not I imagine in the future, there will be some type of virtual TV, lettign you feel like you are actually AT THE STADIUM, watching the games (sports and everyting). watching movies and feeling like you are right there where the action is. People stayign home to watch live concerts and feeling like they are actually there at the concert.

If that does happen...I wonder what the world would be like. I wonder if peopel would even leave their homes to go places like watchign sports, going to casinos (because they can stay at home use their virtual machine to simulate a casino and gamble from home). What would the world be liek when the kids would stay at hoem and use they're computers as a teaching machine so they wouldn't need to go to school.

I mean, if all that happens, I htink the world would be really messed up. Streets would seem more empty, and hoems would be full 24/7. Peopel would become lazy. And after staying at home for like months constantly, elaving their house/home would feel realyl awkward because htey wouldn't know what it would feel like to be outside for mroe than 10minutes to get groceries.

I mean, I have always thought about this...since maybe I was 6-8, I have always wondered what the world would be, and how peopel would be then.

What do you people think? Do you htink this would eveer happen?

Even without that people are going out less and less. You don't even have to leave the house to buy groceries these days, you can order it all online. I think everything is becoming way too easy, but then again I'm not exactly actively rejecting the ease of which everything is happening. It'll be interesting in 50-100 years time to see what people are doing and how much they interact with each other. Or would the virtual reality machines count as a social thing? Since you could probably interact with other people, would it be considered a real social outing even though physically you never leave the house?

Well, staying in the house for years and years would be realyl weird because the next tiem you see another hman being (next to family) it would seem extremely weird. And if you never leave the house, you might not meet new friends, or meet the woman/man of your life. And if you don't meet the woman/man of your life, you will not have kids, and you if you don't have kids, there won't be a gen of kids to carry on the family name and the human race could possibly die. And we humans are starting to depend too much on technology, I mean in 100 years or so, technology will be everywhere, and we will depend on it to live, and if the technology fails, we will die because we won't know what the fu** to do.

Yeah but that's the point I was making, it could be possibly to meet people and interact with others in virtual reality. Would that be considered socialising?

It would in the same way many of you guys meet here, talk on MSN or something and become pretty good friends without ever seeing face to face.

That'd be the difference, in virtual reality you'd see people face to face. At least that's how I'd assume it would be, if you're able to go to sports events/casino's etc.

But what if it's with EVERYONE? Talking to everyone online (except family ofcourse). What if you spend your whole like infrotn of a virtual life? Not goign outside and interactign with others in real life feels like your are trapped in a box (house).

I think you just said it yourself . Not going out is being trapped , and being face to face with someone physically is a completely different experience then virtually or through the internet.

Do you guys think technology could end up emulating real life up to the point where you can't distinguish between real and virtual reality? I mean if we were trapped in a dream for instance, we wouldn't know it's a dream we'd think it's as real as anything.

I dont think we will ever reach a point where going out isnt necessary cuz when I meet a nice woman how am I every gonna hit it? Its not like my virtual sperms will get her pregnant or something. Nothing compares to her sweat dripping on you and the feeling of her trembling....ok, I think you get it.

Its just like the whole notion of the paperless office. Its not very likely cuz even if its just having those little sticky sheets to jot down notes it will be too convenient to pass up. (I dont think that was very clear but w/e, u get the point)

Some interesting thoughts hipn. Thanks for sharing (Y)

Having everything as a virtual reality wouldn't stop us from going outside i don't think. Atleast for me, i NEED to get outside every once and a while. Because even when i'm on the computer for too long, i get all restless and go somewhere else.

*arrives back at computer after 10 mins*

What was i saying? Oh yeah. Also there comes a point if you're alone for too long, where you NEED to see a friend and go socialise. Surely the human mind wouldn't let someone just stay inside. They would literally go insane.

Although who's to say all the virtual realities within our grasp wouldn't satisfy all our humanely needs. :|

Weird.

I think the world in 10-20 years won't be much different than it is today.

Baudrillard wrote about how everything has become simulated. With mass advertising, everything has turned into hyperreality, where things are more real than reality itself, and we're just living in a culture that has constructed itself through commericals, advertising, TV, photographs, and movies. We're seeing the world through a construction of reality rather than actually experiencing reality itself. Kinda scary.
