You just have to watch Rick Mercer's Talking To Americans to find that out. It's hilarious to watch, he makes up really lame stuff and the Americans believe him. Something like, "What do you think about the fact that Canada is now allowing women to vote?", and then whoever he's talking to says something like, "I think that's great, I feel it's really important". It's amazing how little Americans know about Canada. Or maybe not.

Or it is amazing how there are a few stupid Americans that they show on the show. Even though he has probably talked to thousands of people but they only show the funny ones.

Personally , I don't know where some countries are . I honestly thought Tibet was an Island around China . I'm not big on geography.

Thu Dec 01, 2005 2:22 pm

Tobet was its own country until China took over.

BTW, I suck at geography, I dont know where a lot of places are, example where Canadian cities are located and where certain countries are.

Who opposed the death penality again? I mean, aren't you like grown up already? An average high school student here in Slovenia can tell you where 50% or American states and almost every other country on the world is. And still, the great America is trying to install their way of life to every other country on this world. Suck my left ball, Riot.

(I was kidding, R. You know I feel you.)

You feel me? Is that you!?!?!

DO THAT THING I LIKE

Let me tell you a story about doctors trying to educate illiterate village people on the use of condoms...... A villager goes to visit the local doctor saying that his wife has just gave birth to their 10th child, and he wants to know how to have sex but not get her pregnant. So the doctor shows him a condom, and demonstrates by rolling the condom onto his thumb. As he finishes, he gives the villager a pack and tells him to use them as a way to stop his wife getting pregnant. A week later, the same dude comes back with his wife saying that she is still pregnant, but he used the condom, just like the doctor told him to. The doctor asked "how could this happen, did you follow all my instructions?" and the villager said "yea, I rolled it onto my thumb and then screwed my wife"

hm yeah tahts very true... when this american doctor went there and showed them a red condom, and people thought in the countryside that it was the japanese flag, but its getting much improvement.

Sat Dec 03, 2005 7:20 am

Another thing, how would they get the condoms? They can't walk into a gas station and pick some up or something. The government would have to give them a life-time supply of condoms.

Great story. I didn't consider that there are a high level of illiteracy and that they're not as advanced as I thought they were. Thanks for correcting my little blunder :)

Well... think about it... even if China was 99% literate, you'd still have 13million illiterate

First of all are you sure you guys passed elementary school? Regardless of whether you passed elementary school or not , it should be pretty obvious where Tibet is. It's not like locating Tibet is as difficult as calculus (and don't get me started on calculus , which in my opinion is useless but we can debate that another time). Locating Tibet doesn't really take any skill at all. I don't see how you guys don't know where it is! Again , any basic course in history should teach you about the history of China , which in fact is one of the most historical and ancient civiliations in the world. During that course you should have learned Tibet was to the west of China off a map. It's not hard at all.

Meanwhile China shouldn't be hated mainly because they have centuries of influence over nearby countries. Did you know China is one of the most ancient and longest-lasting civiliations in the history of the world? Did you know an amazing majority of countries near China have at one point used the Chinese language? In fact , many Japanese characters are the exact same as Chinese characters. I was actually watching the news today and recognized several Chinese characters on a stone on tv IN THAILAND. I also remember seeing old world war 2 images of Korea with yes , chinese characters written on the streets. The fact is China has had a long influence over the nearby countries in Asia.

China may have an atrocious civil rights record but they are clearly one of the most powerful nations in the Far East. A couple of months ago they were thinking of buying Unocal 76 , which as Americans know is a popular oil company. I was actually watching the news a couple of months ago and several American teachers were teaching Chinese to a bunch of kids in Massachusetts. Other than English , learning Chinese and dealing with Chinese people is extremely helpful in business considering there are 1 billion of them in the world. You can have an advantage over other businesses if you do business in China , and deal with the huge number of potential consumers in China.

I admit there is a population problem in China. Unfortunately , according to several modernization theories which I don't want to get into here , countries with high populations and dictatorships without democracy are not likely to modernize and become a 1st world country like the United States or England etc. Clearly the only way (according to modernization theory) to improve China's situation is to bring democracy and capitalism in , and they are slowly starting to integrate it beginning with a better acceptance of free enterprise. Once the Communist party is toppled and the people are able to vote then China should be on their way to becoming a 1st world country.

And finally : in regard to the cartoons I can't read them at all. It's written in "simplified Chinese" which was in fact invented by the Communist party to improve literacy. Even if it was written in Mandarin I still would not be able to read it...it's too complex and I can only read very basic Chinese.

hm... i seriously think this one should be in hardwood classics

I wouldn't be able to point out Tibet on a map. Then again I'd be lucky to find North America to be honest. We always got to pick in school between doing History or Geography, and I never chose Geography.
