Roy Keane leaves Manchester United

Postby J@3 on Fri Nov 18, 2005 10:37 pm

Wow...

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has left the club my mutual consent.

The shock development was revealed by the Old Trafford outfit on Friday, ahead of the weekend clash with Charlton Athletic in The Premiership.

The former Republic of Ireland international is hero-worshipped by the United supporters who will be surprised to see their idol depart so suddenly.

Keane's contract was due to expire in the summer and he has already hinted he felt the club would not renew the deal. After an outspoken attack on some of his colleagues for their heavy defeat at Middlesbrough was pulled from an MUTV programme, relations were said to be frosty between Sir Alex Ferguson and his skipper.

Although making progress in his recovery from a broken metatarsal, the fact that Keane will never pull on the red shirt again in competitive action, will devastate many fans.

Keane has always been a fiery, unpredictable character but he has been tipped to manage United one day after showing a strong interest in the coaching side of the game.

"It has been a great honour and privilege for me to play for Manchester United for over 12 years," said Keane on United's official website.

"During my time at the club, I have been fortunate to play alongside some of the best players in the game and in front of the best supporters in the world. At all times, I have endeavoured to do my best for the management and the team.

"Whilst it is a sad day for me to leave such a great club and manager, I believe that the time has now come for me to move on. After so many years, I will miss everyone at the club.

"I send my best wishes for the future to the management, players, staff and supporters of the club."

To be honest, they probably would've been better off getting rid of Fletcher, Richardson and Miller. They're rubbish.

Roy Keane is kinda the older fella on that team and I can understand why this has happened. Sad to see him go and hopefully he does well at any other club he decides to continue his career.

He's also the club captain, they don't generally get released too often.

Its almost like when the lakers got rid of shaq. yea he is a good player but hes on the other half of his career so its best to lose him now so u can hopefully find a younger guy with talent for that money who will be there a while. A couple years from now when his knees start going, Roy he would probably be in the starting 11(because he is roy keane) when there is a better player than him on the bench. If you look at the Green Bay Packers, they are playing horrible this season and if it were anyone else starting except Brett Favre, he would have been benched a long time ago. I love Roy Keane but I do understand thats how it goes.

I don't really understand the decision because Roy Keane said he was leaving Man United at the end of the season. His contract was expiring and he wanted to play 1 more season with another team before he retired.

Then he pullen a Terrel Owens on them as that article you quoted said. Plus they said it was mutual consent so he probably got tired of the environment.

Look at his location...and you can see why he thinks Roy Keane is the best player of his generation. I don't think he's THAT good, but pretty good. Captain is much more than just a title like in Basketball. A captain is generally their team leader, their franchise player, etc. I wonder where he'll go...
Bored.

hes like the iverson of 'soccer.' he would die for man utd as iverson would do for the sixers. a great loss for man utd. he was easily the best of his generation. in 1999 we played juventus and he was up against zidane and davids in their prime and completely outplayed them. TRUE LEGEND

Roy Keane was and still is a great player, one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation (in worldwide means).
Man Utd doesn't appear to have anyone who can fill up the hole of his abscence.
Where the hell was Ferguson's head doing a move like that?
Smoke it up!!!

Roy Keane has been one of the best players and hes been very influential for man utd he left after he had a row with carlos queiroz and his comments made about other man u players. ferguson hopes alan smith can take his place, i dont think he can, buts it funny that he scored on saturday keane is supposedly going to move to Celtics

Why do I get the feeling that Chelsea are somehow behind this, they've kinda ruined the Premiership with all that cash in hand cause there just a whole two levels above the rest of the teams in the league and the worst part is how they just keep buying and buying more players, bigger better and brighter. I think the Premiership should start some sort of salary cap and emphasize loaning cause its stupid how a club like Chelsea pays 20 million for a player that'll sit on the bench for most of the season whilst small clubs sign has been's for 5 million hoping they can change things around.

Anyway thats sad too him go, he wasnt a top notch player but I think he's one of the best leaders of his generation although he does have anger issues but at least it isnt as bad as Vinnie Jones.

How would Chelsea be behind this  it's a clash of ego's, and it started when United held a training camp thing in Spain just 10 miles from where Roy Keane and his family were holidaying... Keane didnt want to go to the camp, but he asked them if he could commute from his family's holiday place to training every day but Ferguson said no, and apparentely Keane was pissed and a shit time was had by all.

I've also read that he had an argument with Queiroz, something along the lines of "You fucked up Madrid and now you're fucking up this place"

Was it a way to get rid of Beckham from MU to RM?

Queiroz didn't buy David Beckham. Beckham agreed to move to Real Madid on the 13th of June, after about 2 months of bidding. Queiroz didn't become the RM manager unti after the 20th of June.

Barcelona and Madrid were in a bidding war for Beckham, Laporta wanted to be the president of Barcelona or something along those lines so one of his selling pitches was that he'd bring in Beckham. In Madrid the manager doesn't really have much control over who the club brings in, it's mostly Florentino Pérez the chairman.

Chelsea owns the Premiership right now, they seem to be behind everything. Roman Abrahamovich is the Monty Burns of the English Premier League and Peter Kenyon is Smithers.

I was just being sarcastic Jae.

funny you should say that because recently he just said that there is no way he would involve himself with man u as long as malcolm glazer owns the club
