There is a reason why most the people on welfare are black people.

Is there a reason why most major politicians are white?

Btw, that statement you made makes you a Republican by default :D

I think Matt explained it well in one sentence.

Actually, all the studies I've read say there are more whites on welfare than blacks. The problem is a larger percentage of the black population is at(or below) the poverty line than the white population.

Quit acting like white people are oh so civilized.

And if you were brought up in those times (in a white family), they would have taught you that slavery was Ok. That's what they believed then. Obviously we think it's wrong now, but it's not like if one person boycotted it back then it was going to change the majority. So that point is pretty much void. And I don't recall one person in this thread saying that white people are any more civilized than blacks. You are implying racism on our part.

I'm not going to offer any opinion on the issue of race. That takes a lot more thought and time than I'm willing to commit right now.

I think the problem with Kanye West's rant on NBC was that it was inappropriate. Again, whether what he said is true is irrelevant--in fact, that whole discussion is irrelevant. What matters right now is the survivors of Katrina and the rebuilding effort.

West's statement is controversial and divisive and it distracts people from the real issue at hand, and the relief effort concert was certainly not the place to bring it up. When someone makes an extreme statement, that is, when he takes an extreme position to one side, inevitably, there are people who are going to oppose that stance. That is the definition of what a controversial statement is. And really, that wasn't the point of the concert and it was nearsighted of West to make that statement at that time. Not only are there going to be more people who lash out at Bush (because he is such an easy target, justified or not), there's going to be people who (unfairly, simply because of the statement) lash out towards Kanye West and the black community as a whole.

The question is, is that something we need right now?

While we're on the subject of ignorant remarks, here's what Barbara Bush had to say about the folks living in the astrodome....

"What I'm hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality."

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this(she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

WHAT??

Define "chuckles slightly".
