Would it entice you to come back to the thread if I asked you what would be beneficial to the masses? ;)

"I could tell you the pros and cons of communism and capitalism and why neither is beneficial to the masses... but I won't. I'm leaving."

Only because I would get carried away... :D

Pros of communism: Working class gets benifits. Everyone lives a communal lifestyle which is very healthy. Similar to the way priests and nuns live, they are healthier because they live communally. People get an equal chance in life.

Cons of communism: Lack of individuality, if you want to go in to business you are horribly held down. Almost impossible to reach goal of communism because people in power are power hungry and they are unwilling to give that up in order to achieve the goal of the state. People put the state before themselves, it ends up being like a machine. Even though everyone gets an equal chance to suceed, there isn't much room to move up because government doesn't allow you to.

Pros of capitalism: Free market, people rise and fall on their own merits, government stays out of business, very strong middle class, no limit for how rich you can become.

Cons of capitalism: Exploits the average worker, takes many generations (on average) to move up a social-economic step, gap between very rich and very poor is large, lower class people get very few benifits and end up having to turn to dealing drugs, stealing, murder, anything they can do to get food on the table.

I believe in a mixed economy with aspects of a gift economy built in. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_economy

Take what you read there with a grain of salt, a lot of what it is saying is based on a pure gift economy which is such a ridiculous idea that it is laughable. Why not go back to being cavemen if you use the entire idea of a gift economy, but aspects of it really intrigue me.

Might want to practice making summaries. And you call yourself a future journalist? ;)

Thanks, Indy (y) That sounds like an efficient and practical system (to a certain extent with the gift economy, since human beings are generally selfish and it can only go so far). Is/was there any country using a gift economy? Pretty cool how Wikipedia mostly runs on a gift economy, btw. Gotta love Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_State_of_Christiania

They use a 100% gift economy, and since it is such a small community, it works well.

Imagine something like that being used in the U.S. though

I believe aspects of it would work, but imagine how chaotic it would be to use it in full.

Indy and Cyanide and everybody that enjoys politics or philosophy, grab a copy of any Ayn Rand book on a bookstore near you. (Y)
The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, and Anthem are her best known works.

If you simpatize with communism don't bother, you'll want to burn the books, but Rand's Objectivism is an interesting view to politics and life itself.

Awesome, thanks Jona! (y)

Atlas Shrugged is the one work I instantly recognize. I'll definitely check out those books, but I probably won't read them till much later since I got a lineup of books to read.

Yeah, I made a copy of the journal I made when I was on a cruise with his mom. All our romantic moments together under the sunlight, and that one time on the deck when everyone was sleeping.. or that one time when SHE was sleeping. He hasnt finished that book yet.
Preparation will only take you so far. After that you've got to take a few leaps of faith.
