The PHILOSOPHY thread...because thinking is for free...

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

But honestly, do we know what goes on in a brain-dead person's mind? Is it fair to say that he or she doesn't think?

True. As I have repeatedly said, it is all a matter of definition. First you defin ethe term that you want to philosophically analyze, and then you start analyzing it. You do need a basis on which to work on first...

This makes me think some. How would you define a dream and say that it is different from reality? Perhaps reality is a dream, and when you die, you are really awakened.

Ha!!! The true meaning of questioning reality. Indeed my friens, that is a good thought... Furthermore, how can you be sure that I exist? maybe I'm just a dream or concoction of your mind... You can only be sure that YOU exist. Maybe not even that... :?

so true....who's to say that dweaver, CoolMac, Jae and NLSC and everything that happens to me is not reality, but a concoction of my mind....maybe I've created it to deal with life....maybe each individual does the same....or maybe I'm the only one....perhaps, there is a situation like the Matrix....who's to know?!?

how does one know something is a perfect triangle or perfect zebra or perfect beauty? it's true beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but does society really dictate beauty....is it a product of upbringing, race, religion, customs, beliefs? just some thoughts and questions....

anyone else a fan of philosophising while gazing at the stars?!? that's when it all starts to roll....

So if someone is brain-dead, he is dead as a whole, is that what you say? This is another matter of definition. Definition of the terms 'life' and 'alive'.

Amazingly more vast and difficult, what is a "human being"?

I've often thought of COOLmac as a concoction of my mind, but when I admitted myself to the local psychiatric hospital they said not to worry.

This is all very good thinking, and really makes us go deeper and question ourselves and th eentire existence, but you have to strike a fine limit between 'philosophizing' and 'getting results'. Check out my sig:

Keep an open mind, just not too open or your brain will escape...

It's how each an every one of us thinkers deals with finding that balance that defines how truly 'wise' we are going into the world each day...

That's one incentive... when you're extremely happy with no reason, you philosophise as well, when you face death in your social or family circle, you philosophise too. Whenever something appears or happens that causes you to 'think out of the box' , you tend to philosophise and generalise quite a bit.

As for the Matrix reference, here's something interesting. Some scientists ( cosmologists ) and philosophers say that human beings are a tool the universe needs to verify its existence. After the breakthroughs in quantum physics in th elast 60 years or so, which have shown that in the atom world, observation can actually affect th ephenomenon being observed, some have gone farther saying that the universe's own existence depends upon our observation and asking ourselves quastion about it.
I mean , if humans or oither sentient beings were not around toi gaze at the stars and wonder what the universe really is and how does it work, would there really be a point in the universe existing? It's like the tree in the forrest example. perhaps we feed the cosmos with our thoughs and quastions, much like our body energies fed the machines in The Matrix... Food for thought :D
