Problem With My Comp

Thu Mar 31, 2005 9:19 am

Hi.

Just recently I was on MSN and out of nowhere my screen just turns all blue and I get these messages that I can't quite remember what it said but all I remember is at the end it said: Dumping Physical Memory.

So I restart my computer and mostly everything is gone, like now everytime I restart my computer and I want to go on MSN I have to create a new .NET Passport. And all my Log-In information on the internet is gone.

Also, I had rosters for Madden 2005 and NBA Live 2004 and everytime I restart the games are still there but all the rosters and everything else is gone.

Basically everytime I restart my computer now its like my Windows XP just starts fom scratch (I don't know too much about computers so I tried to make this is clear as possible, sorry )

I know this may not sound like a huge problem but let me finish.

So my first thought was that I had a virus, so I performed a Full System Scan with Norton Antivirus 2003 and I got nothing, so I got tired of Norton since it always comes up with nothing when ever something is wrong.

So I did a little bit of research to find a really good Antivirus program and I ended up downloading a 30-Day Trial of Panda Titanium Antivirus. And as it turns out, I performed another scan and I ended up having infected memory (Which was not disinfected) and over 130 infected files (Which were all disinfected).

So after the scan I restarted my computer to see if anything changed and nothing, it stayed the same with a lot of my information gone.

So I checked the report and I found a lot of "Connection Attempts" in the Virus report. And another thing, when I performed a scan with Ad-Aware 6.0 I checked the report and it found a couple of "Browser Hijackings".

So I'm guessing someone is hacking into my computer through the internet and specifically some files in C:/Windows/System32.

If anyone can give me any advice on anything I can do I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Do you have a firewall? There are free programs such as ZoneAlarm and Sygate Personal Firewall you can search for and try.

Ya, I have a Firewall installed. But I guess I'll try those out see if they do any good. Thanks

never fear a computer engineer is here....now im stumped  j/k
NAV 2003? seriously man get the latest version...
the memory dump thing is your memory having been infected by a memory resident virus........usually we do formats for this kinda thing.....but newer versions of cleaners will do the trick...if you have an extra HDD piggy back your original HDD then scan it from there...never try to boot from the infected HDD as it will load the virus up...

next time get a decent firewall or better else......up the built in firewall from your XP and have some anti spy on the fly.........peace out 8-)

the trial versions wont serve you fully, grab the full versions.....always back up important files next time(in most case nba live games saves, documents, spreadsheets and other important stuff) in a cd.......atleast once a month.because hard drives nowadays aint that reliable, many hackers and virus makers too are getting the upperhand....its a jungle out there.....

 if his solution to a computer problem is to delete anything, imagine what he'd do if his daughter got sick.

No, not "have sex with her"... atlhough :|

HEY COMPUTER ENGINEER!

the memory dump thing is your memory having been infected by a memory resident virus

Kindly enlighten an ignorant PC user here COOLmac:
By memory you refer to the RAM? If it does refer to RAM, if the virus resides in memory doesn't the contents of the memory gets emptied once the PC is shutdown because RAM is only a temporary storage? Does the virus code reside in the HD and once the infected HD is accessed the virus code automatically inputs itself in the memory or RAM?

you seem to know a lotta of things by yourself..so i guess no need to test me.....

a system restore is only good if they have a restore point......since poeple never actually cares to save a safe/valid restore point we end up with no system restore.....cleanig everything up is the surest fastest way to have everything up and running....it doesnt apply to HUMANS though  LOL

Just to let everybody know, I think I managed to fix the problem.

Everything is working fine. Thanks for all the help (Y)

can you post to what procedure you used?

Mon Apr 04, 2005 1:51 pm

Well, when ever I tried to log on at the Windows XP Welcome Screen by clicking on my account I would get a message that said (Not exact words):

"Windows has failed to load your profile possibly because of insufficient security rights or another problem with your system. If the problem persists please contact your network service provider"

So then I would click OK and Windows would work but again, a lot of files were missing.

So using some common sense I created a new profile as a Computer Administrator I deleted the old profile and now everything is fine.

I scanned my system with Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 after updating it and it found an infected file but it disinfected it, and it said my memory is not infected anymore.

I also downloaded ZoneAlarm (Thanks Fender) and it's constantly blocking connection attempts.

So right now everything is even better than it was before I got the virus, my system is running faster and I also got rid of many viruses and spyware that Norton 2003 could not find.

Again, thanks for your help everyone.
