Threads at NLSC take about 3 minutes for me to load these days, so i would just like to make one request:
Stop fucking posting, you monsters!!
Just kidding, was wondering if you guys could give us some tips on how to speed up your net? I've tried nothing and i'm all out of ideas. I have 56k dialup, 550 mhz computer... but it's never been so slow before.

56 K

....stop living in the past is my first tip
nah.....umm well if u want faster downloading get something like download accelerator.....but as for viewing content well I think u have to find a good time....I tend to find the best time to go on the net is when america is asleep or at school/work.....
Try going to google.com n searching ways to speed up your net...u get various handy tools that help at least a bit.......I use to have some when I had 56K but I cant remember the names.....but I doubt u can really speed your net up to a great extent because it is 56K.
Also speed could be due to your service providers.....if their having a problem then your net speed to is likely to decrease in speed....u might wanna call them up n see aswell.
Anyway Im not sure If I helped or not....

Thanks for the reply.
It's not nessasarily (why is it i still can't spell that word?) that i want to speed up my net, it's just that i want to fix it from being so strangely slow... it's been like this for about 4-5 weeks now.

Here are some sites you should check out.........but I think you should call your net provider and ask them for a possible reason as to why its so slow......

3 minuits mine takes 1 second. maybe because i have sbc dsl. anyway dsl or cable is your best bet. it takes me 1 hour or less to download a divx movie.and dont get me started on music.

anyway after a shity internet like yours youll pretty much be pleased with anything.

You should also try downloading new drivers for your modem.

It's because these threads have like 50 replies in a page which I, too, find pretty hard to browse.
Tue Feb 22, 2005 10:16 pm
I actually prefer 50. Any less and it's annoying to browse more pages, would rather load 50 in 1 than 25 in 2... anymore and i would be here for 2 years.
Thanks Najira.

well, if your connection suddenly slowed down, isn't that because you installed new programs (that may contain spywares) or visited "strange" sites (you know what i mean

) A spyware may be eating all your bandwith. Check with these progs if you don't have anything bad on your computer:
Ad-Aware
Search & Destroy
Look also at the
Microsoft anti-spyware. I've read that it's good. (beware you need at last Windows 2K, it doesn't work on 98)
But there's no miracles, if your computer is too much fucked up with spywares, you'll have to format it.
If it's not your computer it could be your provider, as the 56k is less and less used, maybe they're removing little by little its support. Try to get in touch with your provider to see if nothing's wrong on their side.
Last but not least you can tweak your computer to make your connection faster, I'm not a specialist, but if I remember correctly a bit of regedit will already nicely improve your connection
Oh, and some browsers load pages faster than Internet Explorer (
Operaand
Firefox) simply because when they're loading a table (and a NLSC thread is constructed on a table) they show the page while loading it, instead of Internet Explorer who wait for the end of the page to show it all. And with Firefox, you won't have any problem loading 2 pages on the same time

your welcome Nick
and yeah alex......he should check his comp for spyware and adware......specially if u use MSN n MSN Plus....thats another way of ppl adding spyware on your computer
But I doubt it will effect your speed greatly, not sure but I think u should check up on that too.....but I recommend u calling your net provider tmrw(since its nite there) and asking them whethers theirs any problem.
Best thing though would be getting a new connection.....56K is costly(specially since u gotta pay phone bills) n damn slow.....if u have cash in hand I suggest releasing yourself from this connection n getting a DSL connection.

Yeah, tried searching for adware, that didn't help. Although maybe i should update first.
And Cable internet is out of the question for me... $$$
What i might do though is download Firefox or Opera.
Which one is better?

I got Firefox, the very first time you load a site it takes months but after that it's quite fast... with my connection, I noticed the loading time of the NLSC depends big time on your phone line/connection speed. At my house it was connected really really quickly, on a 56k modem and took roughly 30 seconds or less to load a page. At my mums place, separate phone line, it'll only connect at 26 and takes roughly 3 or 4 mins to load a single page.
So basically, call your ISP, call your phone company to find out why the fuck the line's so slow (even if it isn't) and try whatever everyone else suggested. Then start posting, we need someone to post alot to replace Jackal. Now.

i dont trust those random net speeding things because one of them things gave my damn laptop a virus

Go for Firefox, at last it doesn't have any ads (Opera has in its free version) ; but Opera has many more features, so it's up to you.

Don't download a program that pretends to speed-up your connection, just browse computer sites, some of them will learn you tricks to manually improve your connection (such as regedit)

You should use Firefox Nick,it's way better than other browsers...And if you want to decrase page loading, use all cookies. That's what I do.

Firefox all the way babey
Here's what you can do to speed up your Firefox:
- Write “about:config” into the address-bar
- Change “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
- Change “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
- Change “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to something like 30
- And when you have done that you right-click anywhere and take 'New-> Integer'. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”.
It will work best if you have fast internet connection, but it could speed it up other wise also, but I'm not sure there.
You could also look here for some nice tips;

I didn't read all the replies, but...
- Try to use Firefox
- Download drivers updates for your modem or something
- Get download accelarators
Can't you afford to have a cable modem?

speaking bout computers anybody know wheere i can download a free anti-virus??
Wed Feb 23, 2005 12:41 pm
Coincidentially, I just d/l Firefox last night to try it out, and it's great. It's fast and I just love the tabs feature. Multiple browsers within a browser, so it's easy to micromanage.
