Simpsons.

It has a wider variety of humour....South Park gets most(99%) of it laughs through an overdoes of swearing and violence.

south park's best moments are matt and trey's "take" on the current issues happening around the world.

homer simpson has gone through so many personalities. the writers need to stick to one!

thats what i was gonna say

im gonna have to call it even. family guy makes me laugh more, but the simpsons stories are better.

its a tough call.

peter = homer

bart > chris

lisa = meg

stewey > maggie

marge = lois

quagmire > ned

moe > the black guy whos name i cant think of for some reason...

brian > santa's little helper, snowball, etc.

seth mcfarland = matt groening

so its very close.

I think Homer's better than Peter, he's kinda annoying... Brian's a champ though, he'd beat any animal (Y)

I'll take 'IndyPacers67' comparisons. And add Joe vs. Carl. and Patty + Selma vs. The Peuterschmidts (sp?)

Peter > Homer

Bart > Chris

Lisa > Meg

Stewie >>>> Maggie (A complete pwnage here)

Lois > Marge

Quagmire > Ned

Joe > Carl

Moe > Cleveland (although this should easily change in new episodes if they have more time for Cleveland)

The Peuterschmidts > Patty + Selma

Brian > Everyone form Santa's Little Helper to Pinchy

Seth McFarlane > Matt Groening (maybe if I see Matt on some talk show being funny, far as I can tell he sits behind the scenes and makes money)

i agree with most of colin's assessments there (Y)

i'd like to add....
homer will go down as one cartoon's greatest characters but the past few seasons the writers for simpsons have given him so many personalities, giving him excuses just to do about anything. at least with peter, you know he just is a self serving idiot.

meg has to be one of the most annoying characters around. she really brings nothing to the table. lisa has more then her fair share of whining but at least her personality isn't as shallow meg's

i would compare instead:

moe and quagmire as both are dirty bastards, giving the edge to the Q train since he scores with the women one way or the other

ned and joe. both are the neighbors next door and the main characters from each show have a rivalry with them, homer being the bigger antagonist then peter. i would say they're equal

friends of homer- lenny, carl, barney vs. friends of peter- joe, cleveland: it's hard to compare individually the rest of homer's friends to peter's since they don't resemble one another at all other then that they're all drinking buddies. barney, carl and lenny are almost as irresponsible and hold crap jobs like homer while joe & cleveland are married and lead respectable lives.

even though the simpsons have been around so long, lenny or carl haven't been really developed. they still can't stand alone on the screen for more then 1 minute unless homer's involved. that's pretty sad. but i still enjoy the one-liners and their friendship. i give the edge to peter's buddies

both the peuteshcmidts and marge's sister want their in laws gone but mr. peuterschmidt actually attempted to have his murdered. and he banged a dog!

With all due respect to Seth McFarlane, I think Matt Groening is being a bit underrated. The success of The Simpsons is almost unparalleled and in its short run, Futurama won a lot of fans (if not Fox's support). Groening's role in today's Simpsons might not be as big as it was in the early 90s but he doesn't quite just sit back and collect money.

Let's not forget his comic strip, Life in Hell either - the one that impressed James L. Brooks and got the ball rolling on an animated cartoon that would come to be The Simpsons. What I find truly incredible is that Matt was going to create a cartoon based on Life in Hell, but deciding that he didn't want the strip to suffer should the show flop, created a bunch of characters in 15 minutes and named them after his family members (not exactly a well-planned project)...and it has become one of the most popular and influential television shows in the past two decades.

oh yeh, with all due respect to the people invovled with the simpsons, it's been a great show. just imo i think like any other great long running show, it's gets somewhat stale one way another and viewers begin to look for something fresh...

it would be cool if someone started a simpsons vs family guy thread. or something more specific like who's the better father: homer or peter?

Well, for longevity, my vote goes to The Simpsons. They simply have been around longer and just are all-around better. For an immdiate laugh, I would watch Family Guy. I think someone posted this kind of thread last year. Correct me if I'm wrong. :?
