Of course I don't think that Jay-Z is limited to purely "gangsta-rap" that appeals (ironically enough) to white suburban teenage kids. Whenever you're one of the elite, there is legitimacy in your craft, whatever that may be.
The point I wanted to make is that so much of hip-hop has become mainstream and with it has become somewhat stale. It seems to me that most of the rap songs I hear about screwing women and shooting other thugs and "life in the ghettos." Of course, those are compelling topics, but the way they're done has become cliched and hackneyed.
Is there merit to hip-hop and rap? Certainly. And that's because there's a level of commitment and discipline to produce good lyrics (as well as a healthy dose of talent). Rap, just like poetry, uses the words for their sounds and rhythms as well as meaning to communicate the way melodic songs can't.
Any fool can rhyme. But it's the great ones that uses the language and every aspect of it to his or her advantage. So, the next time you hear: "Oh, the beat is hot," or "the rhymes are crazy!", I mean, really, majority of hip-hop now is mostly image and production, just like any other pop music. Like Jessica Simpson, for example (there, I said it).
Regardless, if Shakespeare was an MC, I think he'd kick Jay-Z ass.
All the best,
Eugene
So true with a lot of the things you've said but what about Mos Def? Dead Prez? Talib Kweli? Kanye West? Pharoahe Monche? 7L & Esoteric? Cannibal Ox? Canibus? There is more than one genre of Hip Hop. Peace.

Yes, Guru. The ONLY song I can listen to that he's on is "Work." Everything else, I can't enjoy the song. I just focus on how awful and off-rhythm his lyrics.
The only other person who distracts me with his lack of rap talent is Silkk The Shocker. He has no sense of rhythm either....he tries to cram like 20 syllables into a line that should have 10 at most.

Huge Pac fan right here.
Ok, so Pac gets bagged for not being a complex lyricist...but what's the point of being complex when people don't know what your talking about, or just a few do. I like it how Pac keeps his rhymes nice and simple but straight to the point. Even if he isn't the best lyricist no one holds a candle to him as far as influence goes.
heres why i think Pac is GOAT...he makes songs that no other artists can make that appeal to me....Keep Ya Head Up, Me Against The World, Papaz Song, Dear Mama, Unconditional Love, Brenda's Got A Baby etc....songs that you can relats to that are driven by pure emotion. No, I'm not blinded, know that Pac doesn't have the best skills but to me the OVERALL package is greater than the sum of it's parts.

Understandable and 'nuff respect due, he's one of the most influential artists in music history and not just Hip Hop.

Also, just because I'm white doesn't mean that I like gangsta rap. As you can see, the songs that i mentioned were the ones that got me hooked and they aren't gangsta rap.

I like Guru's flow. There are a few people I just can't listen to. Jay-Z being one. A squeaky, annoying voice with rhymes that frequently turn to nonsense. And KRS-1 has quite an annoying voice and style too.
Too close, some of my favourite flowing:
"It's been a long time, I shouldn't a left you/Without a strong rhyme to step to, think of how many weak shows you slept through/Times up, I'm sorry I kept you/Thinking of this you keep repeating you miss/The rhyme from the microphone soloist"
Rakim "I Know You Got Soul"
