Floyd vs Manny: Do you agree with scorecard?

Postby NovU on Sun May 03, 2015 5:04 pm

I didn't see a thread on this fight with decade of accumulated hype so here we go.

Personally I found this bout boring as hell. Kinda explains why MMA has risen and boxing to the sinkhole.

That said, can someone explain how scoring works? It seemed like a close match, perhaps if you ask me, I'd say it was a tie(if there's one in boxing). And if I had to choose a winner, I perhaps would choose Manny for his aggression. But then I am really a nab in boxing.

Of course I wanted Manny to win, but what Mayweather did is his style of play. Can't really argue about that.

But the scorecards.... 118-110???!!!

I really wanted Manny to win but I knew mayweather was a virtual lock to win with his fighting style. Manny would have had a shot if he didn't fall off in the 2nd half of the fight.

Scoring is per round. I think the judges had Floyd winning like the last 5 or 6 rounds when Manny stopped doing those flurries. He needed to win 2 of those rounds. First half was close because when Manny won a round, Floyd would work to win the one after

I hope to God no one watches boxing again and it dies a quick death

Woke up at 5 am here to watch this match. I was sleeping after 20 minutes. This pretty much sums up the "match of the ages" for me.

I really thought Manny would win but boxing is rigged anyway.

I have never seen a match this rigged since the 2012 NBA Finals.

It looks like Floyd's so confident about winning but maybe that's just his character but the scores are very controversial.

The 2012 Finals? It's when the refs and Stern wanted James to win so bad that even breathing directly at LeBron would get you a foul.

While the score should've been tighter, FM Jr. was still the better fighter with a better showing so it wasn't really contoversial. Scores go round by round.

LBJ FT attempts throughout the Playoffs of 2012:

1st Round: 11.4
2nd Round: 8.5
3rd Round: 11.4
Finals: 9.2

Wade FTA in the Finals: 8 per game.

What's so controversial?

Heat won by 3 games so it's not like 2002 SAC-LAL.

Backing up your statements and checking stuff before you say is encouraged, listening to the idiotic media isn't.

Floyd's patience, just like Sugar Ray Leonard with Marvin Hagler, pays off big time on this one... Yeh he's a great defensive fighter but I doubt that he'll be as dominant if he faced Pacquiao when he still got his footwork, speed, stamina and perhaps punching power... The guy is just a shell of what he was 5 or 6 years ago so I'm not surprised by the result and how the tempo of the fight went (whenever 2 counter-punchers fight, it's expected to be boring)... Over hyped and over delayed thus undeserving to be labeled as the fight of the century... For me, that title still belongs to either the first fight of Gatti-Ward or Castillo-Corrales...

The problem is that watching Floyd Mayweather fight is just the most boring thing on Earth. It's just defensive, defensive, defensive, left jab, straight right, and counter punching as he retreats. It's an incredible recipe for winning rounds, which he definitely won most of last night, but you never get to the the flurries of punches you saw Manny have in Rounds 2, 4, and 6, that the fans love and are more visually impressive. There's nothing controversial about the scoring. Mayweather won the fight 8 rounds to 4, or 9 rounds to 3. Manny didn't win a single round after the 6th. Five years ago he might have had the punching power and stamina to really go at Floyd and potentially knock him out, or win some early rounds to get him to break his gameplan; but last night was more of the same that always is with Floyd. The match went as anyone who has watched him fight over his entire career should've predicted. It was incredibly boring.

'Back stepping your way to W' should be penalized. One thing K1 used to do was giving a warning before penalizing the fighter by 1 pt. FM is a technical fighter, I get that. But that was extremely boring. No wonder boxing is dying. Heck, wrestling as a sport is removed from Olympics now and virtually is gone from mainstream. Sports come and go(see lacrosse). They better make sure they aren't walking the same path as wrestling.

I don't think I have really excited to watch a boxing fight since the Mike Tyson era and even when I heard "fight of the century" I was still like.... whatever

Manny didn't throw nearly enough punches to win. He needed to turn this fight into a brawl like Maidana did. Only shot he had.
