The Olympic Games are not about 'humanity'

Sat Aug 14, 2004 8:52 pm

Has anyone ever told you that the Olympic Games are about humanity. A time where we put our differences aside for 2 weeks to compete in a variety of sports. well IMO it's BS

Olympics contradict humanity
1. drug cheats- self explanatory
2. terrorist threats- at the Olympics shouldn't we all be safe? well we aren't. 2.1 billions ($Au) has been spent on security alone, money that could have been spent to feed starving people around the globe

If the Olympics were cancelled altogether I wouldn't mind. Athletes talk about being united and what not and yet people starve all around the world. Perhaps we should help less fortunate people around the world for 2 weeks every 4 years instead. If not, let's get rid of all the 'humanity' talk

just my thoughts....

P.S I'd appreciate it if Mods kept this in General Talk, thx

It's fairly safe to say that most of the gold medalists use doping. As a matter of fact many of the NBA, NFL and NHL stars as well. I mean, look at Big Ben or Shaq Daddy (N)

2.1 billion on security? holy fuck..

I was making fun of every country that came out besides the USA. Just pointing out random things and funny things that we're "different". My mom said the Olympics are about unity and coming together. I don't buy it. If it's about coming together why does Greek fans give a huge ovation for their home team when they barely do anything with the other countries? If it's about unity countries shouldn't matter. As for potlical view too. They said on there that the Greek don't agree with our forgien policy plan, who gives a fuck? This is suppose to be aout sport. Not politics.

somehow, they seem to get that mixed up.

Mah 2 cents.

You know what, there will always be cheaters, if that's your excuse then don't watch any sport, because life is never 100% fair. And your #2 reason is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. Terrorists are not in the Olympics, they want to divide not unite. Ofcourse they want to disrupt it. I watch the Olympics because I am a lover of all things Sports, but I'm not naive enough as some of you to believe everyone is clean. Thus, I'm not upset when it happens, I just shake my head sadly because they are sacrificing present glory for future quality of life.

your 2 cents suck. of course do the greek people support their own athletes no matter whats the motto of the olympics, its always been like that and its only normal. the motto is unity, that is rite but every country is proud of its athletes. above all its still a serious competition.

No, I'm not saying you shouldn't cheer for you own team. I'm saying they were expecting us to get booed over politcal standings and what not. It's not a place for that. Save that for the debate room.

Everyone should be cheering for everyone despite the politcal views and distractions.

You live in a fantasy world.

I don't expect them to. I'm not saying that. I'm saying everyone says this should be about unity and sport when in reality it isn't. If it was about sport we wouldn't be cheering for people based on political stand.

yea right. look at maurice greene. the atheltes US caught is just a peak... it happens everywhere, even a friend of mine used some in athletics

You're making an assumption based on a very small minority. That's generally what people with little to no general knowledge do. As far as your friend goes, is he an Olympic athlete or just a dickhead?

Edit:

http://www.drugsinsport.net/reports.htm

Go there and you might learn something, the fact is there's over 10,000 athletes competing in the Athens Olympics, for your claims to be true that means 8,000 or more of them would have to be on drugs. Give me a fuckin break, just because you hear rumours about someone being on drugs (Shawn Eadie, Lance Armstrong etc) doesn't mean it's true. I have no idea where your assumption has come from but I suggest you ram it back up to the place where you pulled it out.

a dickhead of course. but even that he uses doping he still wins nothing :D
of course I can't be sure about the usage, but it is naive to assume that the top professional athletes are clean. maybe the ping pong playas but the 100m runners???

Sun Aug 15, 2004 8:45 pm

I think there are athletes in the Olympics right now on drugs that havent been caught, but it's definitely not a majority.

Sun Aug 15, 2004 9:20 pm

^^^like the 2 Greek athletes that had an 'accident'

anyways, it's ridiculous to see anti aircraft missile launches at what's supposed to be a peaceful time. Sports were relatively clean w/o money, but the money incentives are too good to be passed up by some athletes.
