AMenace's quest to dunk

Postby AMenace on Tue Mar 26, 2013 12:26 pm

I've been gone a while from this forum due to university and such, so I thought I'd come back by sorta copying Jaosming's series with him dunking.

My body stats are:

Height: 6' 4"
Weight: 174lb

I'm currently training for vertical jump unlike Jaosming, and have a goal to get at least a 38" vertical jump by the end of the year.

you're 6'4 a skinny 174 and you can't throw it down ??
damn man, how fckin short is your wingspan, your arms ??? you must have t-rex arms if you can't throw down

and you're aiming for a 38" vertical already ?? that's aiming REALLY high according to your body specifications.... because if you're 6'4 with a normal wingspan and you still can't dunk, your vertical right now is roughly, shieeeeeeeeeet I don't know too lazy to do the math, but I'm roughly something like 15" lol, and you're aiming for 38" ??

damn son, all the best to you, I hate to be negative but I have to tell it to you like it is, because you need to set realistic goals for yourself, that's the only way you'll see the proper results.... but if you wanna dream away, I mean it's your life brah

Probably has more to do with his lower body strength than anything else. Hit the gym regularly ffs.

But LoL. Now that's harsh brah.

Just run brah

But seriously, running is what got me dunking when I was 6'4" 190 as a senior in high school. Jumping programs are generally for people who are athletic and need an extra boost to get over that edge. So unless you are in shape already, you might just injure yourself.

On top of that, how are you jumping? One foot off a run like a layup or off two feet?
Opinions are my own.

The reason why I can't currently dunk, is because I haven't tried to in about 3 months. When I test my vert on a standard 10ft rim, I can get my hand and about 3 inches of my wrist above the rim, which roughly translates to a 30-32 inch vert when doing measurements when comparing to my standard reach. So no, I don't think a 38" vert is out of reach.

Also my technique while jumping with a ball, is something that needs a lot of work. I need a bit of work with my approach with a ball in hand to make it match without a ball.

This picture is from yesterday, on a 9' 7" rim. My head ends up 32" higher from standing based on where my head reached in this photo:

I'll get the video of the dunk up later today, got to compress the file size first.

I want to see a dunk-off between Ben, Jao and this guy

yea that pic looks like he dislocated both his arm and his leg mid flight..... they're bent hella awkward

but nah for real though, I think I know what your problem is.... you're awkward.... you're one of those people who have no sense of foot work so you have no idea how to take off in a way where you utilize your jumping ability to it's fullest 100%...
I've seen guys who would do high jumps out the fckin gym, but couldn't figure out how to properly plant their feet to dunk a basketball.... it was one of the weirdest things I ever seen.....

It kind of looks like asking a right hander to go shoot jumpers with his left, it just looks awkward and I bet it feels even more awkward to the guy doing it... it's just one of those things that needs to be practiced till perfection....

Beware of jump programs. They can cause serious wear and tear on your knees. Adjust the reps according to your current strength and stamina. Your core is very important to your jumping as well. Don't do the exercises on hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt. Hardwood floors are ok, but I suggest doing it on grass.

I'm not using any jump program that only consists of jumping exercises. The program I'm using involves a mix of strength training, plyos, core, and jump technique work.

You're on the right track, though don't forget about rest and recovery or you'll set back your goals.

Good luck.

Wish I was 6'4. I'm a little under 5'7 (maybe 5'8 tops in shoes) and still a couple inches short of touching rim on a good day.

AMenace wrote:I'm currently training for vertical jump unlike Jaosming, and have a goal to get at least a 38" vertical jump by the end of the year.
Jesus, 38 inches? I think that's more than Blake Griffin's vertical. Working it out, if I had a 38 inch vertical (say I'm 5'8 in shoes and my standing reach is roughly 7'7-7'8, I have long ass arms), my maximum jumping reach would be pushing 11 feet. Think about how ridiculous that is.

To be fair though, you're already fairly athletic from that pic you posted, you should be pretty close to dunking on a normal hoop with some not-so-drastic improvements to your vertical.

I'm 5'10" or maybe 5'11" 150ish - 160ish (I think 156 lbs) but I can only barely get it in. It used to just bobble around the rim but after some exercises and continuous jumping, I finally threw it down. It's not something I can do with regularity sadly, after a while my knees refuse to work right. I'm only comfortable launching off my left leg, as I am right handed and am not used to gathering with both. This was on a 10 foot rim. Any lower and I don't have a problem.

PS: I'm skinny too.

At your height, weight and age, you just need to practice dunking over and over again. No need to get into some extensive training program or regimen. Just work on your dunking approach towards the rim, planting your legs properly and extending with force.

So awkward looking. Once you work on your explosiveness you should be dunking on 10 with no problem.

From that video of the 9'7 rim dunk, you're very close actually. You made it look very easy.

By the way, draft express has Blake Griffin's max vertical at 35.5, however I've seen as much as 39.5 in other places.
Qballer wrote:

Dude, do you realize how scary a 45-inch vertical on a 6'10 guy would be??? That's like a prime Vince Carter vertical. Blake is 6'10 and 250, 36-38 inches is insane for someone that size.

Gotta work on that technique myself. Being 6'6 with a decent wingspan, 8'6 standing reach, should throw down easily, but that's not the case.
