Moving to australia

Fri Jun 11, 2004 7:29 pm

Im 21 years old i have lived 5 years in the us from 5 to 10 (that's where i got in NBA). The rest of the time i lived in paris where i am also now.
I would like to move to australia as a student in melbourne or sydney in the years to come (don't really know when).
Im sure i will get all the information i need but as there are a lot of aussies on the forum i would like to know what you guys could tell me about those cities in a general way (the people, weather, is life expensive?, the culture...)
Thanks :)

lol...

Melbourne's weather is pretty average, it's not very stable. There are several universities within the city which you might be able to get into but I don't think any of the universities in the heart of the city have accomodation. There are other international/exchange students around, most seem to be able to settle in, find work, a place to live and all that. Last year at my old university I met a guy from south America (can't remember which country), he shared a house with a few other international students to split the rent and had a job on the side to pay the rent, bills etc. My old uni was about 20-30 minutes from the city with a big campus and accomodation for students, very affordable too, but all you get is a small room...

No major complaints about Melbourne really, it's affordable depending on where you live. You can't expect to go to school, work, live in the best place and be 100% happy. You'll enjoy it if you're realistic; parts of every move are difficult (y)

I think there's less crime in Melbourne than Sydney, but that's just what I've been lead to believe, not necessarily a fact. If you can get as close to the city as possible (depending on money and all that) you'll get the most enjoyment out of it + you will less likely need a car. The outer suburbs are boring. The city has everything you need: school, work, clubs, sexy women, sports and aquatic centre (pick up b-ball) and all the sporting events (basketball, australian open tennis, formula 1, rugby, afl). Hope that helps somewhat, and hopefully someone else can provide another perspective!

You might want to go to Queensland for the weather and the bitches, but it's probably going to cost more, and the place has less substance (tourist destination) :P

ive been to Sydney 2 times. Weather is not that good if you like dry warm days. It's Australias biggest city and since your 21 you probably wanna party, i guess Sydney would have the biggest range of clubs and stuff. Sydney is also the worlds homosexual capital (no joke here), unfortunately i saw 2 dudes making out on the train one day there

I live in Perth....Perth is perfect for old people. There is no night life here, it's probably Australias cleanest large city....more of a place for living when your older

Ive lived in Adelaide, Perth and been to Syndey, one thing i can tell you is that of all those places Perth has the most attractive females, that's about the only good thing bout here....oh and the weather is pretty kick ass here.....mostly dry throughout the year and warm

I'd pick sydney though cos i love big cities

and the worst thing is bout Australia is.........no NBA
instead this country loves to watch 44 guys chase after an egg shaped ball in short shorts (think Paris Hilton short shorts) and kick it between sticks. They call this football even though they use mostly there hands

That's probably true... I heard they have jelly wrestling clubs!! :D

 ... not that there's anything wrong with that...

LOL! I'm sorry if that offends anyone, but that's a pretty good description! Tourists tend to like seeing footy games though.

Move to Sweden instead damnit! Warm weather in about 4-5 months, hot blondes, nice food, low crime but HIIIIIIIIIGHASS taxes (n)

Just a note, be wary of everyone's location. There's a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne, so you're not necessarily going to get an unbiased opinion.

Both cities have their positives and negatives, but frankly there's a much greater city, one that is quite underrated, is the sixth largest in Australia and is about two hours north of Sydney. :P

I live in Melbourne and i've been to sydney twice, and i would reccomend Melbourne.

Sydney's roads are more confusing that melbourne's. Melbourne's are straight with pretty much no curves... all 90 degree angles.. easy to get around and harder to get lost. Sydney's city roads are windy and you can get lost if you don't know your way around.

Misc. fact, Melbourne is pretty old. Lots of old looking buildings and stuff which is pretty cool. Sydney is more modern looking which is also pretty cool. All depends on what you like i guess.

Sydney has more people from overseas than Melbourne. More 'ethnic' i think is the right word.

Sydney of course isn't all that new itself, despite what some of the architecture suggests. It was the very first settlement in Australia in the 18th century, afterall.

Nick's right about the roads in Sydney though; one wrong turn, and you're lost for the day.

Stevan wat uni did ya go 2?

Went to La Trobe for 3 years, currently at ACU in the city.

Listen to Slam Harder, he's right. Sweden is the kinky capital of the world, people having sex all over the place, and lots of lesbians! (y) :P

Yeah Sydney's road system is atrocious in some places, there's streets coming out of no where. The trains are OK, they take you everywhere, places like the Blue Mountains and stuff in just 2 hrs and unlike in Perth you probably won't get mugged in Sydney on the train

Sydney also has a starbucks, 711, burger king etc
A lot of companies are set up in Sydney as well, me being from Perth if i had to get my playstation fixed and it had to be sent to Sydney, took 3 weeks to get it back. Sydney also has a wider range of stuff, you'll more likely find NBA gear in Sydney than anywhere else in Australia

Perth has nice beaches and down south has some kickass tourist places.

Oh, don't go to Melbourne, it has too many Detroit-Pistons-hating-STOOGES
Trust me, they're no good

Loads of slope'eds, wogs and Arabs is what he was tryin to say. Yes that's my first racially insensitive comment in 2 years, shut the hell up.

I live a couple of hours outside Sydney, but I have lived there and I wouldn't recommend it either. The pollution is horrible, the people aren't exactly what you would call friendly and as has been stated, it's possibly easier to escape from Alcatraz then it is to navigate your way through Sydney successfully. On a + side, some parts of Sydney look great, and put the rest of the country to shame (and no, I dont care about "natural" monuments, man made all the way). The place is recognized by most foreigners as Australia's capital, so most major international companies target Sydney hence most products being found in Sydney. Having said all that, I'm moving to Adelaide so er... just go wherever... word of advice, dont go to Perth, I've never heard anyone who doesnt live there say a good word about it... hmm, then again it could be alright. :?

Nice pics, nature...
Actually, my dad is telling me to go there as he thinks it's a great city but isn't it like really cold?

Mon Jun 14, 2004 11:15 am

no, the coldest it usually gets during winter is 5 degrees (celcius) which is just cold enough to make me put on a sweatshirt and pants. During spring/fall it's 10-20 degrees, and usually 20+ in summer. Except the last two days where it was something like 18 and raining. I live a 5 minute walk from the beach and it's 20 a minute drive to the mountains.

LOL, he really got you!

LOL you bastard! Yeah he got me, I admitted he got me good. And where did that get him? He's gone! (Actually, he was quite a funny bastard (y))

Brisbane is da bomb!

Sydney is gay...and melbourne...There are some strange ppl in melbourne...in fact our head of college came from there and he is quite queer....not as queer as ppl from Sydney!

But Brisbane rocks cause it's sunny 24/7 for almost the whole year!
