Its not really. Its pretty common around here to make sure you don't grab a job and then try to blow all the holiday leave to just leave and get quick cash. Hell, the only reason Ozgirl is here is her usual days off just happened to fall this weekend. If it hadn't she'd be at work with little to no benefit.

I meant having a separate probationary period for holiday pay. Seems to me if you're rostered on a holiday and there's a holiday rate, you're entitled to it. However, I admit I'm going by our employment laws and policy, maybe that's standard over there?

Probably. Any sort of benefit at all here you have to be there at least 3 months most places.

Ah, fair enough. I'm pretty sure that isn't the case here at least in most places. There are probationary periods when starting a new job of course and you need to accumulate pay for holiday leave but I'm fairly certain you receive any overtime and holiday rates as applicable from the moment you're employed.

In any case, I've had a pretty relaxing Christmas Day so far. :xmas:

Australia has most worker-friendly environment for unskilled staff. It's unbelievable really for anybody who has worked outside the country & who then comes here.

Of course, that has escalated cost of living, so it's Catch 22.

The weather has been crazy in the last 24 hours. Thunderstorms nearly all of last night and most of this afternoon.

Currently a pretty good light show going on outside my window. (Y)

It also results in a bit of a culture clash when it comes to the concept of tipping.

Same... even with summer starting a couple of days ago. We had a temp. of 37° C at 12pm then it was 20°C with rain and storm at 5pm.

Christmas was here with my parents, my grandmother and my brother, only the five of us. For a little celebration today, cousins and aunt coming. For next week, I have no idea.

I'm actually considering sleeping through it since I got nothing better to do anyways...but I'll probably end up staying up because I just ate a huge bowl of frozen yogurt. Did go out for dinner with a couple relatives earlier tonight but nothing really for countdown or whatever. I did have a pretty eventful holiday break prior to this so I guess it's a nice break from that.

Hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday season. (Y) I had a great time partying with friends down in Sydney. Good food, good talk, drinks, some games and capped it off by watching the harbour fireworks from the roof of their building.
