Anyone know how to achieve this video effect? 4:3 to 16:9

So I have a bunch of 4:3 footage that I'll be inserting into an HD movie and instead of having lame black side bars to maintain aspect ratios, I want to do something like this

It's a portion of the same video only blurred. So normally you'd copy-paste the video, mask it so only a portion of the side is shown, and blur it. do the same on the other side and you're done. You just have to make sure that you're doing it on 16:9.

care to name a program I should use?

Why don't you stretch it to 16:9 and sorta force that ratio? Looks better than those big ass blurry bars.

I hate stretching, I couldn't stand it in Live 08 with widescreen.

Adobe After Effects is what comes to my head. Don't know if Sony Vegas can blur clips though.

Don't really see the big deal, 4:3 videos stretched to 16:9 look perfectly fine to me, but fair enough.

I'm pretty sure you can blur stuff in Vegas, no?

Google told me about "Avid Free DV", dunno.
I doubt WMM could do this.

my idea is to use a program, maybe vdub? to do this, and then save it as something wmm could use....maybe i need to move on from my beloved wmm 2.6

but yes and no, I have high speed footage (yes, high speed footage) from our wedding shower which is shitty quality 4:3 ratio. then I have 1080p mp4's that no matter what I use to convert, always unsyncs audio and then causes WMM to spaz.

So I want to use the blurry border thing for the high speed footage, but also I've wanted to know how to do that since 2004 when ESPN HD was doing it for their 4:3 shows. The end result is supposed to be a DVD and unlisted HD YouTube video for my family.

I also am considering using the blurry borders if I do a new mix of my old basketball footage and if I get into Live again.

You could always crop the top and bottom off and zoom in.

Or you could put the 4:3 video layer on top of a blurred stretched layer. You'll need a mask to blend it like your video example.

^ That's exactly what I did. Just had the clip done in 16:9 aspect ratio (and since my monitor is still the good ol' 4:3 with no resolution support except between 800x600 - 1024x768, I had to improvise WWE-style). The only difference is that I was lazy to duplicate the clip again, blur it slightly lesser than that of the sides and mask it (therefore making it the same as they clip you posted).

This may also do the trick on other video-editing software:

So basically the recorded clips are in 4:3, I made a composition in After Effects in 16:9; then I imported all the stuff needed. The recorded clips are then duplicated. The duplicated clip is then stretched to fill out the space in 16:9 then blurred. I then placed the stretched and blurred duplicated clip under the original clip and there you have it.

Side note: rendering your video in WMV format makes the file size so much smaller.
