Your top 5 (or 10!) Movies

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

Speaking of battle royale, if you have seen the condenmed with stone cold, it's the same idea. Only with a bunch of kids instead of adults on an island killing eachother. Battle royale's backstory is also a bit more interesting. I prefer the manga over the movie, but enjoyed it all the same.

I've seen Ichi the Killer. A crying murderer is orginal to say the least. Bloody movie too. I liked how he used the axe kick to cut people in half.

1. Terminator
2. Alien
3. Predator
4. Aliens
5. 28 Days later
6. Leon
7. Terminator 2
8. Blade Runner
9. Die Hard
10. Fist Of The North Star

Honorable mentions to la haine, the evil dead series, the other die hard movies, adam sandler movies, the fly, jackie chan, bruce lee and jean claude van damme movies and indiana jones movies.

My mouth was gaping open in shock and amusement during the scene where he was beating off while the chick was getting her ass handed to her.

That's one of the weirdest scenes I've ever seen.

3 - Battle Royale

My anime nerd friends have raved about this movie.... I also hear it's a pointless bloodbath (typical of those crazy japs I guess), so if any one could elborate more on this movie on what makes it great please let me know and I just might get around to watching it :) .

I really liked it, my brother had to talk me into watching it, I believe my exact words were "I'm not watching a stupid Asian comic book movie. Go jack off over some anime porn you freak"... but I watched it, and it was awesome. There is a bloodbath element to it and the back stories to alot of characters (which would explain alot in the movie) were cut out of the version I saw, but if you can get the extended one it'd be great.

I'm sure you have an idea of the story but basically a class of students are sent to this island every year as a way of preventing insurgency or something and have to fight to the death. The survivor gets to go home, the rest of them die obviously. They have tracking collars on that explode if they don't stay on the move and are all given a weapon and some supplies at the very start. It sounds nerdy but it turns into quite a cool movie. The ending is a bit weak though.

I have nothing better, I can't do this same with the Actor/Actress thread, it's shifting depending on what I like at the moment.

American Psycho
Dr. Strangelove
Airplane! (has asdf watched this? or should I automatically dismiss his picks?)
Hot Fuzz
A Shot in the Dark

Thinking about this I discovered I apparently only like comedies as "great" films. They can't afford to survive without good writing and performances.

Oh, and the sixth man/men?:
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country/Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
A lot of modern movies could learn from the cribbing of "better art" those two did. You need no background really. (II: Khan got stranded by Kirk, so he's pissed. VI: Klingon's killed Kirk's son, so he's angsty about it. II is a perfectly paced "submarine film" and VI is a perfectly paced "thriller" and yes, Nicholas Meyer is awesome.)

EDIT: WAIT WAIT WAIT. I read el_badman's post. (Yeah, he's el_badman forever.) Guy Pierce. Another comedy that deserves to be there:
Ravenous.

Pierce is also balls in The Proposition. Which fits in the Eastwood Trilogy and the Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai as the pretty balls second tier of awesome.

This is why I bail on movies beyond "recently seen!"

I'll also say, I like a lot of films in this thread. (Others...) And I mean a lot, like three stars quality, a number are four stars. (I said Dark Knight was two stars and not as good as Batman Returns remember.) But I was basing the list above on "I offer you The Godfather for the fifteenth time or American Psycho for the fiftieth?" Same reason I tap Dr. Strangelove over Citizen Kane. And assuming I don't get RiffTrax on them.

BATTLE ROYALE IS FUCKING EPIC.
I thought I was just about to watch a Japanese rehash of Dangerous Minds, how wrong I was.

From what I understand watching the film (no dub or subs), juvenile delinquency is really high so the solution is to send the troublesome kids or those perceived to be troublesome by their school superiors/parents to an island and kill each other (knowing the culture in Japan, being tardy or low grades in school can already be considered troublesome). It's like nipping in the bud the supposed chaos that might possibly spill into the streets if the rising delinquency isn't stopped. Last one surviving in the island gets to live as a reward. Juvenile delinquency goes down, a lot of potential young criminals are erased from the face of the earth, good deal for the idea to be implemented. So the most notorious school kids are then gathered and sent to the island. Then the killing starts...

For all the awesomeness of the film, the sequel was really disappointing.

1. Godfather Part 1=Despite De Niro being awesome in 2, the first one flows better and makes more sense. Greatest movie ever.
2. The Princess Bride-needs no explanation
3. Donnie Darko-fucked up but awesome
4. Edward Scissorhands-the best film burton has ever made.
5. Chasing Amy-My personal favorite of the kevin smith canon. Maybe its because i related too well after a bad relationship with a wild girl. But the story and humor of this movie are fantastic.
6. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-depiste some narrative shortcomings, this movie never ceases to amuse me. Actually got a thompson for sheriff tshirt for my bday. Can't wait for Rum Diary to happen.
7. Clerks-almost as good as chasing amy for me but the kevin smith movie that started it all-awesome. "You know what you and me have in common? We both eat Chinese." "dick" "exactly."
8. Nightmare Before Christmas-Not great story but the music and visuals more than make up for it
9. Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz-cant seperate these 2: two of the best comedies ive ever seen.
10. Into the Wild
