Many people say that it causes movies to look more like a soap opera or a video from a handheld camera. It can be turned on or off, although the tv will always be running in 120hz/240Hz.
Is that the thing when i watch movies at friends house that makes the people all look like they're inside the television but the sets look fake as hell even when filmed on location?

^Yes.

Ya my point was most of the time you won't be able to notice the difference between 60/120/240 Hz unless it has some form of video processing like automotion plus. Therefore don't feel like you need to wait for a 240Hz tv or w/e

Not true. The main benefit of 120hz is no 3:2 pulldown for film to smooth out film material, so that 24 fps material-frames can be duplicated(24x5=120) evenly rather than having one frame being duplicated 3 times and another 2 times(12x3 + 12x2 = 60).

So I bought one
1080p Vizio 37"
Loving it so far. The tipping point for me was my sister's boyfriend offering to buy my current TV for a few hundred. On top of that I'm selling my pool table so overall I'm only paying 2 hundred or so for the TV.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. I have noticed some tearing when using the panoramic setting for SD channels, but if I just use the normal stretch or black bars it doesnt do it.
It just passed my video game test. Rockband, Trials HD, NCAA 09 MME, and Halo looked and played great.

we got contractors coming to take care of it. they got rid of the carpet and aren't going to do the floors over until we're gone...it's a mess down there
the landlord wants to get this place back on the market ASAP, which sucks, but he said that he also wants to keep us long term since we are good and have been doing a lot of upkeep ourselves (caulking, drain unclogging, just little crap like that) Kathryn is applying to grad schools right now too so we might have to move to the Boston area or up in bumfuck Vermont, or we could stay right here in my area.
We've been at this place for over a year now as well, so a move shouldnt be too too surprising...even if I dont want to
