Well, it's not very similar at all. The 2k bug was merely a fear generated group-think based on nothing.
2012 is a very different thing. It was all start to make more sense as we move towards it. But if you aren't aware of what's going on you're going to be left behind.
Obviously nobody can say for sure what will happen in 2012 until it happens; there are a LOT of theories. It's been prophesied about for thousands of years. It's predicted to be the most novel event in human history and of which we will shift into a new age. Some theories suggest that it is when we discover time travel, some theories suggest we will see an apocalyptic end (although personally i think that's bullshit), some theories suggest that we ascend, some theories suggest that our human mind/consciousness evolves to the next level (able to do telepathy, telekinesis, space/time travel, etc, shit like that).
There are SHITLOADS of theories, and i haven't yet conformed to any of them (how can anyone, really?), but i think it could be a combination of a bunch. One thing i do know for sure, is that there will be a massive energy shift. And i imagine it will be a positive change.
You should research it.

They aren't prophecies. They're predictions based solely around exactly what I said. The end of the Mayan Calendar.

They are not based around anything factual, they are based around a supposed magical quality to this date.

Actually, it does. Because it's the same as all other conspiracy theories and movies.I don't have to watch the entire thing, there's this thing called Google. And everything about this movie is exactly the same. A bunch of vague poorly sourced indirect claims that cannot be proven either way. In fact the argument is exactly the same even if the details differ. EDIT: Lulz, the more I watch, the more it's EXACTLY THE SAME. Specific footage culled from other works with a "narrative bridge" between them full of unsupported and stupid claims. And it jumps between topics randomly and just throws "information" at you so you can't follow the argument because there isn't any kind of one. One moment you're being told to reject law by citing the law as your authority, next you're seeing a random standard criticism of realist foreign policy clip from some documentary featuring that MIT linguist, now you're being told about standard studies of humans' senses, then you're being warned that violent images and scenes can desensitize your children and that all language is an attempt to control your mind, and then finally guess what, world events happened during dates on the MAYAN CALENDER! All within a five minute span. And what do these have to do with anything? What's the narrative connecting them? Well, nothing but the original claim that there's a secret pagan Freemason Jew plot to control you that the Mayans knew about and all this random crap is just proof because some lead singer of a nobody band tells you it is. And we're all going to reach some new age bullshit transcendence in 2012 that the Mayans planned for even though they just gave up trying to lead us to this at some point for no clear reason.

Actually, the more I watch and think about this the less sense it makes. The American Revolution was a secret plot by this group I'll just call the Jews. Yet, our esteemed narrator points us to the Constitution and the natural rights theory that spawned it. He also advocates our increased invocation of the document to protect our liberty. But why should we use a document created by the Jews as part of their secret millenia old plot? How can we not be sure that following it was part of their original plan, but we decided otherwise and so they had to adjust their plan? They've so perfectly orchestrated all other world events for the last thousand years, was the Constitution their only slip up? And it was such a massive slip up that it completely provided the legal outlet and enshrined the moral authority to escape their plot?

Concocting sinister elaborate yet flawed logically plots and accusing Progressives of eating babies isn't the way to defend liberty and promote individualism. The best argument is a simple one.

Who is best to decide what's best for you? Yourself or some bureaucrat? Most people answer that one correctly. It's the other one they have trouble with. Who is best to decide what's best for that guy over there?

That reminds me, Roseanne Barr claimed the world would end in July of 2006 claiming some Bible reference. Of course, she also identifies herself as a kabbalist and a follower of Jesus Christ, a litle weird given that Kabbalah is associated with Judaism.

Well, me and benji completed this debate over msn, and we eventually concluded that this thread went on a tangent of which i am a fish out of water with. I'm not very well-informed when it comes to politics. (Poor benji, all he wants is a decent debate with someone with a brain.)
