Fallout: New Vegas

Sat May 01, 2010 9:55 am

I figured I might as well create a new topic for this game instead of adding stuff in the Fallout 3 thread.

IGN did a pretty extensive preview that shows that it's basically more of the same great things that Fallout 3 had to offer, plus plenty of little improvements, including stuff from the earlier Fallout games for the nostalgic.
The main issue here is that it's exactly the same engine as F3 (which was also TES: Oblivion's engine) that will be used once again, and it does not look like there were will be much visual overhaul. F3 looked already pretty dated when it was released 2 years ago, so it's a shame that they didn't decide to upgrade the whole thing, especially when you see the level of eye candy that recent and upcoming games are coming up with.
Still, as long as it's as good and compelling as F3, I am sure that mods (for the PC version at least) will be more than enough to make it look a little better. I personally can't wait to try it, I see that November 16th of this year is the announced release date for now.

Man, the graphics could be worse and I'd still be all over this. Can't wait for November.

I never found anything bad about Fallout 3's graphics. November is a long way away.

They could still port this to a new graphics engine...

Good idea, I was thinking of making this thread myself. (Y)

To be honest, I'm not too upset to learn that it'll use the same engine as Fallout 3 and that the graphics will essentially be the same. I loved Fallout 3 and having enjoyed a number of GTA games that used the same engine and graphics with new missions and stories, I think I'll manage with a new Fallout saga with a few additions to the game, a new setting and a new story. As I mentioned in the Fallout 3 thread, I ended up buying Fallout 3 twice as I picked up the GOTY edition for my new PC last October to play through it all over again and try out the new system but I might just stick to one system this year, probably PC. But we'll see. ;)

Also worth checking out, The Vault's portal for New Vegas:

I ended up buying Fallout 3 twice

I actually did the same. I had purchased the regular version as soon as it was out on PC, I finished it, but a few months later I was missing the game too much so I bought the collectors' edition, which allowed me to also play the new DLCs. That game is just so good...

No doubt I'll be getting this though. I'm quite excited on how the guys of Obsidian -- which some of were from Black Isle, the folks who made the original Fallout and Fallout 2 -- can whip something out for the Fallout universe again. And I'm hoping it's not like Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. :|

EDIT:

New Vegas article from The Vault: wrote:Hardcore mode will be an optional setting which makes the game more realistic with things such as dehydration and healing over time.

I can imagine how great this would be.

Hardcore Mode does sound pretty challenging, something you've at least got to try out. I have to admit I'd probably turn that off most of the time as I think the novelty would wear off for me.

Andrew's not hardcore. :shake:

At the very least, I'll be briefly hardcore. ;)

In all seriousness, I suppose it's difficult to judge how well that'll work out before I've even played the game but judging from past experiences with similar concepts such as eating/working out in GTA San Andreas and the dating/friendship activities in GTA IV, I reckon it's something I might find annoying rather than enjoyably challenging after a while.

Wow. I almost never replay the same game twice, especially all the way from beginning, and always play on the easiest setting. That just me? Rofl... You guys sure do sound hardcore.

I don't do that with every game but for me, Fallout 3 was just that addictive.

I'll probably go straight to Hardcore mode.

Great stuff. (Y)

I can say that not much stuff has been revised from the graphics and HUD. Even the fonts are the same.

So long as the "sliding physics" are removed, I'm fine with it. Looking forward to this. (Y)

True, though to be honest it doesn't bother me much. I might be using melee weapons a bit more often in this one though.

Good cut scenes tho I don't see anything particularly exciting or new. Just hoping to see the endings to be more worthwhile.

It does look like they're recycling a fair few textures and the like, though it seems we'll have some new weapons, enemies and outfits at the very least.

IGN added some additional comments about why we should be looking forward to New Vegas. I didn't know about the possibility to mod your weapons in-game, that should be pretty sweet.

I was already sold, but that certainly adds to the anticipation. (Y)

For me, I just try to stay away from too many trailers as I think it could be somewhat of a spoiler. Nonetheless, that video is well informative. Good to hear the game is its own, with a lot of new stuff to expect. Though, getting dehydrated or having more to do dealing with injuries, I hope it won't be too much detail driven.

Re: Fallout: New Vegas

Hardcore mode is optional though. As I said I can see myself playing with it off as I sometimes find that level of detail intrusive and annoying more than challenging in a fun way, but I'll give it a go.
