Californication: Season 3

Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:57 am

Californication is back for another season, beginning September 27th. Presumably Karen won't be appearing this season so the dynamic is probably going to be like the first season without Hank trying to win her back, just hooking up with an assortment of women and the misadventures that follow. Looks like Charlie and Marcy's story will continue as well.

Wish You Were Here

With Karen having moved back to New York, Hank has to deal with rebellious Becca. Charlie and Marcy move back in together despite the fact they still intend to divorce each other.

The Land of Rape and Honey

Hank starts work as a college professor of a writing class and gets into trouble with an unexpected admirer, while Charlie deals with Marcy's romantic life and her new boyfriend.

Super excited for this show to come back. Been waiting all year. I read some synopsis that said becca gets a new friend into sex drugs and partying and im not sure im ok with corrupting the one virtuous influence on hank...but we'll see how they pull it off. I trust them after the first 2 seasons.

I'm giving it a chance to work too. It could be an interesting conflict with Hank since it's something he indulges in but won't necessarily want for her as a father and it makes sense as her character is getting older.

Watched the season premiere tonight. Fucking love it. That is all that can be said. It does look to be predictable but im always pleasantly surprised by this shows insanity.

I know what you mean. The minute Hank flicked his cigarette at the cyclist, I knew it would be the husband or another guest at the party because that's how it goes for him, but it still worked. It's off to a fine start.

Another great episode, Kathleen Turner's character is hilarious and Eva Amurri is gorgeous. Once again, hands down the best show of the week for me.

yeah they somehow are making eva amurri look like meadow soprano...not really sure how or why. But i'm not gonna complain. I see where they're taking this season..i just am not sure if the death of a student is different enough from the ashby scenario

Agreed, that wouldn't be altogether surprising.

Another fine episode this week that hit all the trademarks. (Y)

Me like Eva Amurri's boobs.

Yes, a fine way to start out the episode.

Between that nudity and the general nature of a Hank fantasy, Hank's philosophising at various points of the episode, more embarrassment for Charlie and a fairly effortless hookup, I think they covered all the hallmarks of a fine Californication episode.

enjoyed it...had some friends tell me it was down but i think this is just one of those buildup of character development this show has pulled off the past 2 seasons. Hank can't hit bottom and try to save himself for his daughter till shit's going great and it all bites him in the ass in the end. I hope its no that

The conflict with Becca is realistic and certainly fresh though. The break from the Hank/Karen relationship story - or at least pushing it to the background - has been good for the show, it's a nice change not to focus on that. There's a lot going on, yet the frantic pace doesn't seem to hurt the characterisation or the plot. I think they're at the top of their game, though I'm not sure how many more seasons they can squeeze out of it. I'd say a couple more wouldn't be too much of a stretch though.

So, it looks like we've got our themes set for the rest of the season: three women in Los Angeles interested in Hank while Karen's in New York and Becca's teenage rebellion. Another entertaining, envelope-pushing episode that I'm sure the Parents Television Council enjoyed.

 I really enjoyed the episode, though, and overall I really like the direction the show is taking, Karen was getting boring..

I wasn't finding it to be too boring, but it's refreshing all the same.

Good episode, though Karen's return seems to be leading towards a predictable fallout.

I have to say, Ellen Woglom is doing a fantastic job of playing a nasty little bitch. I guess the shit hits the fan next week.

Guess I'm the only one still watching/enjoying it?

Latest ep was another good one. I've always been a fan of the single set/location for an episode technique when it comes to comedy as it usually facilitates really good character-driven and "reveal" humour.

Now there's a downer ending for you. Kind of saw it coming as soon as I saw the title for the season finale. I suppose it was bound to come out sooner or later but with Madeline Zima's absence I thought they might be done with it. I see it's been renewed for a fourth season, should be interesting to see where things go from here.

The last episode made up for the so-so third season.

Karen's reaction was to be expected, but I still felt extremely bad for Hank. In all honesty, legal or not, Madeline Zima looked hot when they were doing the deed.

Felt bad for Runkle too, that one caught me off guard, I thought they were going to be fine. What irked me more was the way she left the papers.

"Sign when you get a chance, k? :)"

Wtf?

i always feel bad for runkle but then again he pretty much does it to himself. my only regret for hank is that he didnt kick his ass even more. i wish he would have left him twitching in a pool of blood but whatever. i like the show alot more without karen, i like destructive hank not i wanna be a good boy hank

I actually thought the third season was pretty good, at least as good as the first two if not a little better at times. I've enjoyed what each season has brought to the table so far, it's all worked in its own way.

Absolutely, there's a certain unfairness about Karen's reaction even if it's understandable. A lot scumbags in real life no doubt use the "She looked 18" excuse but at the same time, I think it's fair to say that a lot of good, decent guys have been honestly screwed over by it.

Sauru wrote:i like destructive hank not i wanna be a good boy hank

Isn't that basically how he's been from day one though? Destructive yet still somewhat well-meaning through it all? If the character was simply just a sleaze, I don't think he'd be half as interesting or entertaining.

I've recently been doing marathons for this show and I've since caught up with the latest episode. I've enjoyed everything so far and it's become one of the favorites. Like Andrew, I've found this season to be enjoyable. At the very least, I've enjoyed Jackie's rack.

I enjoyed it more when Karen wasn't around. It just meant more fun for Hank.

Ah, Eva Amurri. By far, Susan Sarandon's best work.
