Advice on Position Playing?

Wed Jul 09, 2008 8:54 am

ok..i need some advice here for my position.

Bio
17years old this year
6"0
130lbs

Strengths: Shooting 3s, mid range
blocking
man on man defense
layups

Weaknesses: Jumping (can only touch the box under the rim)
Speed
Strength
Stamina
Left hand Dribble
Rebounding (lack of strength to box out)

past seasons coach had me play sg/pg
but now i grew from around 5'4-5'5 to 6'0, i'm tallest in my team, but also the thinnest and weakest in terms of strength.
its the offseason right now, i donno what skills to train in since i am not sure what pos i am going to play, or is suitable to play.

any suggestions welcome

Oh for fucks sake...

If you dont know why the hell you dont put on weight, how the fuck should we?

Don't just eat something. You gotta eat fattening things. Go to McDonald's and eat like 4 Big Macs. A bucket of KFC helps too.

What the hell is up with these threads? Why don't you just ask your coach? Does it really matter what position you should play?

Wed Jul 09, 2008 12:21 pm

well..it is the offseason, so i cant ask the coach

and yeah...cause i needa train myself in a particular area for the position that i am most likely going to play.

sorry if i bothered anyone in anyway....

Look, just work hard at basketball and do what you do best. Your coach will decide what position you will play based on your height in relation to your teammates and your abilities (what you do best). You could be picked for multiple positions. I'd say stop worrying about what position you will play as long as you're prepared to be a well-rounded basketball player.

^Exactly. You need to be good at every position if you want to be a good player. If you have intentions of pursuing a career in basketball, you have to be able to master the skills required for every position. Being 6-0 and just 130, if you don't grow in height or put on some muscle, you'd definitely play the point in higher-level leagues, even if you were taller than your teammates. So prepare yourself for everything.

Everyone of your weakness greatly influences your "Strengths".

EPIC FAIL.

Indeed.. You could be a good player, but you it's hard for you to be a good athlete. 6'0", 130lbs, and you think McDonalds makes you bigger ? Haha, fun. You got to do weightlifting, etc, you got to run and soon you improve your speed and stamina, weightlifting to imrpove your strength and weight, and you look at drills, or do some vertical program. At 6'0", being a good athlete, you should weigh atleast 150 lbs and then you need to be uber quick. Good luck bulkening up at the McDonalds gym.

People who are not German or gamers yet use the word uber should be shot.

150 is still pretty damn skinny for 6-0, even if you played in a league with no physical confrontation. I say 170 min. if you don't wanna get pwned.

Oskar, you don't actually gain weight solely by doing weightlifting. It's the supplements that make you gain weight. So, yeah, while McDonald's isn't exactly healthy, you should still eat more calories than you consume if you want to gain weight. Weightlifting's only purpose is to make sure your daily-intake transforms into muscle instead of fat.

you'll put on weight eventually, once you hit alcohol 4 nights a week & KFC most days a week....it made me the man I am today  naturally I don't do either of those things anymore, nor should I, but such is uni life & living out of home....

anyways, as I was reading your bio, based on your strengths, you should be a wing forward/SF....this would allow you to shoot the 3, midrange shot....depending on what defence your team plays, you'll play some perimeter defence, but if in a zone, also closer to the hoop....but you must develop your 3pt shot & get fitter....a lot of boxing out is technique....strength definitely helps, but box the hell out, you'll probably get some foul calls from opposition player pushing you in the back or going over your back....hold your ground....don't be a pussy....don't worry about your size....

I actually wouldn't be concerned about your strength....it sounds like something that isn't going to be changed overnight....you can still improve your strength by basic core activities like push ups, jogging, etc....so just work on your core fitness, that'll help you more at this stage I think....when jogging, working on short bursts of speed, maybe for 20-30 metres or length of basketball court, as I find that more important....also take a look at Brandon Roy videos (don't worry I recommend him to everybody), the guy is great, you can learn a lot about footwork & other facets of the game from watching him play....good luck (Y)

Yeah, I used to weigh 130 coming out of high school but started working out and eating right and gained 20 pounds since then. Of course, I'm only 5'8". :P
