Broken Will

So that is the name of my brother's band. I think they rock, but I probably have a biased opinion. I really wish they would work a little bit at trying to meet some people, get noticed, etc. Anyway, here is a link to my favorite song of thiers:

Broken Will - The Winding

I guess what I'm asking is that you all take a listen and let me know what you think. Is it something you'd want to listen to? Is it worthy of radio play? What do you think? Personally, I think it is good enough to make mine or anyone else's rotation. [/url]

Wow, that was actually pretty good. I'd download the album for sure, I like the singers voice. Not sure if I'd say it was quite ready for mainstream radio play but it's definitely something I'd listen to. Do they have any other songs online?

Not as of yet. I have been trying to get on them about getting it done though. If you want to hear a couple more, I could upload them to the same site though.

Yeah that'd be great, get them to make an EP or something lol I really like them.

Not my style of music at all, but even so I didn't find the song very captivating. Seems to be lacking some edge to it. Needs that something extra to keep the listener focussed on the song. Didn't like the production of the track much either. I think it would be better if it had a bit more depth to it, as I can imagine it would sound live or in rehearsals. It's all a bit too crisp and flat.

But in saying all that it's miles better than most starting groups can produce and their is a very solid foundation to go somewhere with it. Maybe a rework of the track slightly, perhaps lyrically, and a bit more ambience in the recording and it would be good enough to get some radio play.

But once again, that's just an opinion from a fan of different music styles (though I have played in bands and solo, and am an avid music fan). Trying to provide more constructive feedback than be harsh.

Thanks, Ty. I'll keep that in mind and let and maybe mention it to them sometime. The problem with some of those suggestions is that they require hiring a true professional, and that means $$$. That can be hard to come up with when the band isn't exactly paying your bills as it is. But I guess if you want to make it, thats what you gotta do.

Jae, whats an EP??? Anyways, they have a website, Brokenwill.com, but it hasn't been update in a LONG time and it has lots of broken code and stuff. There isn't any music on it. I keep harping on them, but I don't know enough about it to fix it myself so..... I guess they have to be the ones to want it, not me.

An EP is an album, it usually has 5-8 tracks on it... alot of newer bands bring them out when they are starting, it's a good basis as far as trying to find a recording contract/selling to fans at gigs and such.

What I would suggest (if they haven't done so already) as far as a free and smart way of getting more attention for them, is to set up an account at PureVolume.com and also a MySpace (duh). It's easier than running a website and a good way for random people to discover them.

If they want anything graphic/design wise for that website I'd be happy to help out in a few weeks when I go back home too.

Well I guess they do sort of have an EP then. They just gave me a CD with 4 songs on it, a buddy of theirs recoded it for them. If I get time, I try and upload those other songs for you to listen to. I'll also let them know about the graphic/design offer, I'm sure they'd be interested.

Awesome (Y) The Winding is getting played to death on Winamp atm lol.

I liked it. Not mind blowing and Ty does bring up the point that the song lacks that captivating factor, but considering that it isn't "professional" I'd say it's pretty good to listen to. How long has this band been playing together?

Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:52 am

Not bad. To me, the drums are lacking, maybe the volume. Towards the end it seems like two singers are battling to be the lead singer. I like the delay on the guitar.

Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:29 am

The drummer is actually probably the best musician in the band. You'd really have to see him go at it in person to truly appreciate him. Oh, and that is actually the lead singer just singing backup for himself. ;)

Anyways here are the links to some more songs:
I'm not sure what the titles of the songs are as I don't have the case with me at the moment.

track 1
track 3
track 4

Lyrics and especially the chord progression are boring to me, but then again I'm an elitist music major with a concentration in jazz studies, so I'm nearly impossible to please when it comes to recent pop music. The use of dynamics is rather uninteresting i.e. pretty much every part stays at the same volume throughout the song.

Fri Sep 21, 2007 6:00 pm

The song structure in song 1 is alot better than it was in The Winding, not too big on Track 3 but 4 is awesome. They remind me a little bit of the old Three Doors Down mixed with Trapt.
