The Music Recommendation Thread

Well, the title here is pretty self explanatory. I think that NLSC has a pretty diverse range of musical tastes so its a good place to hear a variety of opinions from all different genres and just show everyone what album or song you're currently listening to and tell us why you think its good (or bad, for that matter).

Oh yeah, and please try not to insult someone else's musical tastes. I want to make this thread simply to share the music that we enjoy and hopefully find a new tune/album to listen to. If you don't enjoy that specific musical genre, just keep it to yourself or try not to be too offensive about it.

I guess I'll start.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81



I've never heard of this band until someone here in NLSC mentioned them (can't really remember who), but I've listened to their newest album and it's great; I can't wait to get a hold of some of their other albums. If you enjoy blues with a hint of psychadelic hard rock then I definitely recommend the album.

If I were to rate the album, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Pretty solid album overall if you're into the gritty guitar rock style that they have.

Bullet For My Valentine: The Poison

Heard the track "Hand of Blood" playing NFSMW and instantly got hooked. Can't wait for their next album. Songs I recommend:

The Game: Doctor's Advocate

Definitely feeling this album more than the Documentary, good attempt to bring the WC back on the map. Songs I recommend:

- Let's Ride
Worth Looking For:

Might have been me that bought them up. They're one of my favourite bands. Baby 81 is a good album by them, I really really like it, but it is probably their 3rd best. Their debut was amazing, a bit more psycadelic and it takes a while to get used to, but there is some cracking tracks.

Their 3rd album though is the best so far. Titled 'Howl' it is very different to their first two albums. It is a lot more acoustic driven, with a strong blues and folk influence, and a touch of gosple. It is a very complete album and the one I would recommend for you to pick up next.

Their second album 'Take Them On, On Your Own' is an average album from a turbulent time in the band. Members walked out and so on. Still has some cracking track (U.S. Government & Stop are personal favourites of mine) but lacks that something to make it of the same quality and class as the other 3.

Protest The Hero - Kezia

The best album I've heard in 4 years.

Also another vote for CexCells, and one for The Used - Lies for the Liars.

My reccomendation would have to be one i literally just got 10 minutes ago.. Its a few years old, but i got it based on a thing i read about them in Total Guitar.. So if you get the chance and like a bit of Alternative or Punk, check out Billy Talent's 'Billy Talent' album.. Id say they have kind of a 'non-emo' Jimmy Eat World sound

Edit: Adsf, are you sure the BRMC album isnt called Baby 81? Because i cant find one called Club 81, plus the picture you used says Baby 81

My bad Dean, I should've noticed that typo.

Anyway, Billy Talent are pretty big over here. I don't really like the lead vocalist's voice, especially if he tries to hit a high note with that squeal of his. Plus their lead guitarist's hair looks like shite. Overall, they're not bad and do get a lot of exposure here in Canada.

I think this could be valuable as a "if you like this, then you might like this" thread... I know a lot of times I'll find an artist and I'll try to find other people who sound like them.

i.e. I like Neo-Soul stuff, and Bilal is one of my favorite artists, so I looked into Raheem DeVaughn, Dwele, John Forte, and D'Angelo.

You guys should definitely check out some Bilal stuff.

I think this could be valuable as a "if you like this, then you might like this" thread.

Ok, if anyone likes alexisonfire, pre-STS AFI, From First To Last, Hopesfall, Finch (sort of), Dragonforce you will like Protest The Hero. Everyone's heard The Used, if you liked Decemberunderground (more specifically 37mm and Love Like Winter) or Shiny Toy Guns you will like CexCells as Ben rightly recommended.

I was rambling to Jae earlier about Laser Life. So I started listening to The Blood Brothers - Young Machetes (2006) for no reason.

I must have not listened to this closely, or just forgot about it, or maybe it is my change in tastes since October, but I approve. So poppy, there is more on here than "Laser Life", one of the hottest songs evah. "Camouflage, Camouflage", "Spit Shine Your Black Clouds", "Lift The Veil, Kiss The Tank", "Johnny Rider", and "Giant Swan" are some of my approved tracks.

In some songs they're picking up where ATDI left off. (Blasphamy, I know.)

If you're looking for some kick ass, catchy-as-hell, groovin' rock, might I recommend:



Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

You can stream the whole thing here.

I personally suggest the tracks "The Underdog" and "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb".

Not recommended for people who don't like to rock and/or dance.


An aside: The Blood Brothers definitely peaked with Burn, Piano Island, Burn. Nothing they've done since can hold a candle to songs like "Ambulance vs. Ambulance", or "The Shame". Except for "Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck", that song fucking rules.

I personally think Young Machetes has more depth than Piano Island.

However, I also think Ga is a letdown, loses a bit of the Spoon feel, that Kill the Moonlight does it better, and Gimme Fiction is better overall. "Finer Feelings" is solid.

Anyway, despite the disappointing Lover, The Lord Has Left Us remixes on it, since it was reissued this year and the original was/is fantastic:

The Sound of Animals Fighting - Tiger and the Duke

At least The Heretic remix is passable, hard to screw that one up really.
(Background: All SOAF parts were recorded seperately without knowledge of the others. Which makes some of the songs that much more remarkable.)

Nice recommendation MC5. I'm digging some of the songs on the website and I'm most definitely going to check them out.

Agreed, Kill the Moonlight is probably Spoon's strongest album. I disagree with Gimme Fiction, though. I thought it was a minor disappointment. Had some killer tracks, but overall it kind of dragged on. I like the sonic variety on Ga, though it too, has a few duds. I would say that "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" is one of Spoon's best tracks, though.

I'll be checking out those albums/artists that you guys have mentioned. My sister's birthday just passed, and she told me about an album she wanted because she liked a certain song that she heard. The artist was Datarock, and the song was "Fa Fa Fa." While searching for it, I found other music that I will be banging out of my car for a while. Some of it is old, but I really wasn't listening to this kind of music back when they came out, so it's new to me.

Datarock - Datarock. Computer Camp Love is funny to me. The reference to Commodore 64 makes me like it more. Fa Fa Fa has a a very nice beat to dance to.

The Delays - You See Colours. Their song Valentine just kicks ass, imo.

White Rose Movement - Kick. I'm liking their sound.

The FutureHeads. Loving that Meanwhile song. The lyrics are so true.

Royksopp - What Else Is There. I think I like it because it sounds kind of like 80's music.

My favorite band right now is still Muse, which I discovered from you guys in the music thread. I love several of their songs, usually liking one, and then adding another, then another, starting with 'Time Is Running Out', then 'Hysteria', 'Butterflies & Hurricanes', 'Thoughts of a Dying Athiest', 'Hyper Music', 'Starlight', 'Supermassive Black Hole', 'Map of the Problematique', and 'City of Delusion'.

The site I search so I can listen to a whole song is basically an index of music blog sites, with their own player, so you can do a search and you can open a player with a playlist of all the songs you searched for, as long as they are still available.

Recommendation (well sort of): Interpol - Our Love to Admire

I think some of you might have heard of Interpol before, but for those who haven't they're an indie band that have been overexcessively compared to Joy Division.

I think their newest album is a slight departure of their previous sound which is sort of a good/bad thing. I mean, their first two albums are pretty similar and this album is no different. Nonetheless, their previous albums were pretty good and well received so I guess they're sticking to the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" formula. The album sounds a bit more lighthearted because there's a bit of piano that could be heard every now and then to give a more "emotional" aspect to the music, but if you were a fan of Antics and Turn off the Bright Lights I'm pretty confident you'll be won over by the new album.

If I were to rate the album, I'd probably give it a 7.5/10. Nothing really groundbreaking, but I think it's worth adding to your music collection. I would really like to see something a little different in their next album. This album is a step, although a small one, in a new direction though.

Deftones - Adrenaline (1995)



I know it's not new or anything but I've just recently gotten really interested in the Deftones so I'm not gonna listen to their new album just yet. This album is full of energy and I am enjoying it quite a bit. The music on it is sort of a mix between metal and alternative rock I guess you could say. I'll be the first to tell you that I absolutely hate that whole scream your lungs out the entire time type of metal. While Moreno does scream a lot, it isn't the same fashion of typical heavy metal. He has a great voice really and while it is unintelligble much of the time, it relaxes me. Their music has wonderful instrumentals. I absolutely love the guitar riffs on the songs.

I'd say if you like Tool (like me) or any sort of alternative metal/progressive rock then you should definitely check out this album and the rest of their stuff.

Adrenaline is without a doubt Deftones best. Be prepared for disappointment following this one. Though, Around the Fur had its moments, as well.

Collective Soul - Afterwords

Really feelin this album. Recommended for all alt.rock/indie/rock fans.

I used to be a huge Deftones fan and saw them live many times, I would actually argue that White Pony is their best one. I've always liked the 2 previous ones, but this one has a depth that none of their other records has reached since then.

Cause if so, I totally agree. If not, I have no idea who you're talking about, but I'll check them out, but only because you've got Explosions in the Sky in that list.

As for Deftones, admittedly I'm relying solely on memory as I haven't listened to them in at least 4 years, and I haven't even heard anything from them since their self-titled release, you know, the one with "Minerva" on it.
