Mon Aug 27, 2007 1:02 am

well my computer caught a virus after months of searching for porn, nd now I need a new computer. I don't know anything bout computers and I want a suggestion for agood computer to download music and a fair sized monitor. help me please so I can start saving the money I need.

Mon Aug 27, 2007 1:17 am

Reformat your computer and get a girlfriend...

Mon Aug 27, 2007 1:32 am

I would say just build one, You can get a barebones kit and the rest of the parts to a very respectable machine for about 400.

other than that, I guess just go to dell. I think theyre the devil, but for the non hardware savvy they will get the job done for you. Their rebates are decent, too.

Mon Aug 27, 2007 5:16 am

Doobie you double-threading fuck, just format your PC and reinstall.

Mon Aug 27, 2007 7:09 am

Well this computer is pretty old, so in a way the last straw with this computer was the virus, I was planning on buying a new one either way, and I really need help. Where can I build one and what do I need?

Mon Aug 27, 2007 7:10 am

Don't ask me. I'll just say, "Get a Mac."

Seriously, if you need a computer built, just go to a computer store, buy the parts you need and put it together. Do research on brands. If you just want to buy a computer without building it, I'd just get a Dell.

Get a Mac, definatelly. You won't have viruses or spyware. It's great for music and also for porn. :D.

agreed.

and u can run both windows and osx from the Mac ;)

which brings me to the question...why are PCs needed anymore? :?

Tue Aug 28, 2007 2:33 am

Because Macs are goddamn expensive.

Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:22 am

Also, if you're foolish enough to believe that Mac's rise in popularity will not come with a rise in viruses/spyware designed to inflitrate Macs, then you're a more optimistic person than I, that's for sure.

Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:52 am

You know I wonder if Jesus would even be that tech savvy.

Tue Aug 28, 2007 5:04 am

Jesus knows bitch!
There's a gap in the Bible that is between his childhood and sudden appearance as a 30 year-old preacher.

Jesus fell off the grid and used that gap to hone his l33t haxor skillz.
He got tired of having a l33t life and started preaching to the masses.

i have 2 wicked old computers in my attic that id like to get running again, but whenever i start them up they take ages to load because they have so much shit compiled on them. so my question is how would i go about completely getting rid of EVERYTHING on them?

Tue Aug 28, 2007 6:02 am

Delete via DOS.

Tue Aug 28, 2007 6:08 am

how do you do that?[/sorry]

Tue Aug 28, 2007 6:13 am

how do you do that?[/sorry]

It might give you the option when you press F8 repeatedly while BIOS is loading. The screen that appears asks you how you wanna start Windows, and it might include formating options.

Getting a new hard drive ;)

It's a possibility, but keep in mind OS X is based on Unix, while Windows has their own system. I think there's been only one OS X virus to date, and that one was harmless.

Yeah, I know, but the key words in that sentence are "to date". It may not ever reach PC proportions, but it'll happen, mark my words. Where there is a will, there is a way, and obviously many people have already demonstrated the will.

Personally I just don't like Mac's because they feel almost like glorified video game consoles. They seem fairly restrictive in how much the user can customize/change things, and I'm not so fond of that. It could just be a result of my relative inexperience with Mac's, but I've heard the same thing from many Mac users.

Suddenly the Apple corner feels warmer :)

Because Macs are goddamn expensive.

I hate it when people say this. It's totally untrue.

A PC costs the exact same as a Mac if not more and here's the explanation:

An iMac costs from 1299$ to $1799.
It comes with everything you need: a large monitor, mouse and keyboard, wireless router built-in, quality software (benji might disagree, but I - and I don't think I'm the only one - think it's top notch software) and you don't need any kind of anti-virus/spyware/malware software nor a firewall.

Here's the real price of an own-built Windows-based PC (prices are approximate):

PC: $400.
20" Monitor: $200.
Keyboard and Mouse: $40.
Wireless router: 80$.
Operating system (Windows Vista Home Basic): $200.
Quality, legally-obtained software: 300$ if not more.
Anti-virus: (Norton 360 All-In-One Security): $80.
Anti-spyware: (Ad-Aware Plus): $20.
Firewall (ZoneAlarm): 40$/year.
-----------------------------------------
TOTAL: $1360+ and it still looks ugly.

Not to mention the fact that it's still harder to get the job done than on a Mac and the software isn't as good (good alternatives to the new iLife 08 are practically inexistent and the only quality alternative to the new iWork 08 is Microsoft Office, which STARTS at $150. That's almost twice the price of iWork).

It's a possibility, but keep in mind OS X is based on Unix, while Windows has their own system. I think there's been only one OS X virus to date, and that one was harmless.

That's a good point, Cy, but I think the main reason viruses for UNIX-based OS's don't exist is because of the fact that only 5 to 10% of all computers in the world are running Mac OS or Linux.

That's why I like things how they are and would like them to stay like this;
My grandfather always used to say "The less people know about them, the better the things are".

Of course I don't want Apple to go bankrupt but let's face it: if Mac OS takes Windows' place as the main OS and Apple takes the place of HP as the main computer manufacturer, it's really likely Mac OS gets tonnes of viruses.
LOTS of people take profit from viruses, and I think they'd do whatever it takes to keep taking profit from it.

Personally I just don't like Mac's because they feel almost like glorified video game consoles. They seem fairly restrictive in how much the user can customize/change things, and I'm not so fond of that

What do you mean by "customize/change things"? What things are there to customize or change?

Tue Aug 28, 2007 4:54 pm

The virus thing to me is something to pay attention to, but to honest I still dont care that much, I havent had a virus/spyware problem in damn near three years. Apple may be safe (for now) but all that does is create a group of complacent drones that will shit themselves the day something actually does go wrong with their mac. PC users learn to think on their feet, lol.

Its like growing up in the streets of NYC as opposed to pennsylvania dutch country.

Nice analogy. Now think fast maceo, give me your money. *sticks out my piece*

I only need one kind, not all of those, of course I'm a bit techie.
I hate doing work on a particular software and not being able to access it with another computer. It increases the workload, for which Macs are popularly known to lessen?

Not everyone uses their computer for movie editing or anything graphics related.
It could just be a glorified porn stash.

I'm not really sure, but I think this barrier has been exceeded. I think most of the stuff done on iLife and iWork can be easily accessed on a Windows-based PC, and vice versa.

As I said, though, I'm not really sure, so Cyanide, Magius, Ty, and the other Mac-guys can confirm.

LOL, you're stuck in the early 90's, Shadow; Macs aren't just for graphics.
Everything you can do on Windows, you can do better on Mac OS X (except for videogames), IMO.

End of discussion Joe'. I owned you.
