No vegemite in America?

Sat Oct 28, 2006 12:43 am

I heard that vegemite, amongst ANYTHING with folate is not allowed in America anymore, with the exception of bread...

1. Is this true?
2. WTF why - whats wrong with folate?

:?

Bullshit. Unless you have proof otherwise

Taking a look at Wikipedia, I'll answer number 2: "While highly popular in Australia and New Zealand, it has never been successfully marketed elsewhere. It is notorious for the dislike it generates amongst some foreigners."

And for number 1: "The Food and Drug Administration later stated there was no import ban on Vegemite, and that it was never pulled from American supermarket shelves."

The mistake that foreigners make with vegemite is that they eat their samples off a spoon or something with nothing with it.

It's quite the tangy substance. You have to have spread lightly on heavily buttered bread or it's not worth it.

Sat Oct 28, 2006 1:25 am

I've never even heard of it...

Sat Oct 28, 2006 1:31 am

I've been to australia and since i was on a sports trip...there was hazing....the hazing involved vegemite....if i eat that ever again it'll be too soon....Nick i took your advice even cuz i had talk to some of the australian teams...i spread it very lightly on a piece of toast...and i still almost choked
The ban on folate i dont think is true because right now about 200 research studies show folate/folic acid can prevent birth defects such as spina bifida...as koberulz said, its still in cereal and bread and pregnant women alot nowadays take a supplement for it. Vegemite is not on the shelves because out of the 100 or so americans i know who've tried it...1 have liked it. 1 out of 100 people isnt enough to mass produce and stock vegemite in the states. Also, if they did, walmart would try to drive down the prices and then the vegemite company (the big one was kraft when i was there) would have to foreign outsource their jobs to afford to still make vegemite....and we certainly dont want that

my post was in reference to folate, rather than vegemite specifically.

and last i heard, it was banned completely. pulled from shelves, searched for at customs, etc...

Sat Oct 28, 2006 2:20 am

I said do you speak-a my language? And he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich...

Sat Oct 28, 2006 3:11 am

Is vegemite that black pasty thing that looks like molasses?

Sat Oct 28, 2006 4:09 am

yeah yohance...from my understanding its the sludge from the side of vat after beer is brewed....its really salty and in my opinion was horrible, but hey to each his own

EDIT: http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/veg ... 78247.html

answer from the FDA....

Sat Oct 28, 2006 4:21 am

heh, never heard of it but I'm reluctant to eat anything described as "sludge" and "black pasty thing" :?

But if Vegemite is not banned in the US and folate is in Vegemite (I'm assuming), then wouldn't that mean folate is not banned?

Sat Oct 28, 2006 4:37 am

What should be banned is tofu. Makes me sick everytime I see products like tofurkey.

Sat Oct 28, 2006 4:56 am

^ That reminds me, I have a friend who freaks out over soy because it has estrogen. As you can guess, he's a big homophobe.

Sat Oct 28, 2006 5:31 am

according to the thing i posted from the FDA, if its IN something already, its fine...if people are putting more folate into things, its not....not sure why, i'll have to do more research later

I regained consciousness and lay huddled in a corner until Mike came over and pulled the bread out of my hand.

That was a good read haha

I had vegemite once for my Travel and Tourism class for a cultural fair thing for a semester long assignment (beginning of the year you selected a country to research about, throughout the year there were different parts of the assignment, ranged from a research paper, a brochure to promote your country's tourism, a current event report, and the final part, a 2 week itinary for a trip to your country :x , had to calculate the costs and everything, lots of crap to do). It was served spread on a cracker. Didn't like it much though, but I respect those in Australia and New Zealand that like this stuff. How do you Australians and New Zealanders serve vegemite?

Sat Oct 28, 2006 9:10 am

when i was there the aussies would play jokes on us...Since they were the ones running the competition we were at, they provided the meals...they like to sneak vegemite onto one sandwich in the US box and just wait and watch whoever got it end up in the fetal position in the hotel lobby...;-)

Sat Oct 28, 2006 9:13 am

I'd rathe eat feces.

On toast and sandwiches; it's our peanut butter and jelly. It's an acquired taste to say the least.

Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:19 am

I dont eat the stuff anymore but when i was a kid i couldnt get enough, once you eat lots of it, it really starts to taste nice and its addictive in ways.

Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:37 am

I think most people in America just dont eat it properly...
I mean, look at this: (from benji's link)

Image

That would taste like shit... Vegemite needs to be spread ON TOP of butter or margerine, and even then done so lightly...
Mike added some lettuce and made a little sandwich.

LETTUCE? what THE fuck...

Image
Thats the idea... put cheese with it! Cheese is great with vegemite (just not expired cheese like they used... morons)

As for my questions about the ban on folate ... apparently it was all bullshit :?

Heres news on it: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20623973-2,00.html

The great Aussie icon - faithfully carried around the world by travellers from downunder - contains folate, which under a technicality, America allows to be added only to breads and cereals.

Kraft spokeswoman Joanna Scott said: "The (US) Food and Drug Administration doesn't allow the import of Vegemite simply because the recipe does have the addition of folic acid.''

And heres something denying it: http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/US-gov ... 72812.html

"There is no ban on Vegemite," US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) spokesman Mike Herndon told AAP.

Under US regulations, folate can be added only to breads and cereals.

"One of the Vitamin B components (in Vegemite) is folate," Herndon explained.

"In and of itself, it's not a violation. If they're adding folate to it, boosting it up, technically it would be a violation.

After seeing this, and never hearing of vegemite im really interested in trying it. I wonder if I can find some on the black market.
