Cell Phones?

Fri Jul 14, 2006 1:41 pm

Well my cell phone contract expires in August, and I want to get a new phone. I'm not a big fan of the Razr which I've had for a year (which is for sale cough cough).

So, what, in your guys' opinions, are the best phones out right now? I really like the look of the SLVR and Samsung T509 (Bar-shaped phones are the pwns).

those new ericssons are amazing i would get one

Fri Jul 14, 2006 6:55 pm

i hate the motor razrs they suck cuz they break so easily

Fri Jul 14, 2006 7:05 pm

How on Earth did you manage to break it? I've got a RAZR and not even come remotely close to breaking it.

Me neither *showing off*

If you've got money to spend and aren't interested in it's features, get the Nokia 8800. You'll stand out given not many around you will have the phone.

If you want a complete phone (MP3 player, 2.0 Megapixel camera, expandable memory (memory card), long battery life & ease of use) get the Sony Wxxx series.

Personally, I had the w800i and despite it being white & orange, that has got to be the best phone I've handled. Sure, it isn't as flat as the Razr nor as nifty looking, but the fact that you can just press one button to activate it as an MP3 player is just awesome. A 2GB memory card is easily obtainable for like 30 Euro's. The camera quality is also great, even has a flash and everything.

The Motorolla Rokr has it too, but I've never been a fan of the Moto's looks, besides I don't think it has a 2.0 MP camera. I could be wrong though.

I'd probably get the black sony ericsson, instead of having the walkman button in the middle, it has it on the side. Besides, the black looks gorgeous.

Now if you have money, get the Nokia 8800. Without contract you can get it for around 700 to 900 Euro's. With a one year contract it's something like 450 euro's and a two year contract it's around 350 euro's. The screen is amazingly clear, the silver color is eye candy, the 0.5 MP pixel, as bad as it sounds, takes decent quality images. It's got 64MB built in, not expandable (alas) and has bluetooth available for file transfer.

Basically it's not really a teenagers phone. The sliding mechanism I was a bit sceptical about, that and the buttons (going off of reviews), the sliding mechanism works perfectly, really smooth and the buttons don't bother me.

Next month I'm getting the "grey/black" complete housing for the 8800. The gold is a bit too "grillish" for me.

whats the fone thats not flip but slim like the razr? thats it :)

Fri Jul 14, 2006 9:49 pm

Get the Nokia 3250. I don't know how much it is over there, but my cousin got one and it is awesome, buttons are very nice. I think the camera was 2.0 mega pixels, the screen is nice. The memory is very good aswell (I forgot how big the memory was, but when he came over, he put alot of songs on it from my PC) and you can put video's on it aswell.

That one is quite hideous, if you're going to go for the Nokia, get the N90 (I think) has a 4GB hard drive. :o

Fri Jul 14, 2006 10:02 pm

You have it like that (the way in the picture) to take photo's because the camera is on the side and then you turn the phone around so you sort of hold it like a real camera.

It looks pretty good once you turn the section with the numbers the right way.

I'm really not looking to spend more than $250 at this time. The 8800 looks amazing but the $500 price tag (w/contract) is a bit more than I want to spend. I looked up the w800i and that's a great looking phone as well...does it only come in that orange/white color?

Funk, the SLVR is what I'm leaning towards, but only because of the look. I have no idea how it performs...the phone reviews and sound the same to me so they don't help much.

And whoever said the Razr breaks, that's untrue. I've dropped mine at least 4 times (while it was open), and when it hits the ground, it just closes. It's not a bad phone...I've just decided I don't like the flip-phone look.

The Nokia 8800 is absolutely amazing (Y) My dad has that phone, and he's not even using it to the fullest :x I have a Motorola L6,and it's working well, quite a good phone as well. (Y) The only thing about Motorola Phones is that white powder tends to get under their screen. My L6 has it, as do my friend's RAZR's, quite annoying.

White powder eh? Doing some special group activities there are you now? Haha, I'm just kidding, my RAZR has these white spots on the screen too.

The w800i does indeed come in that color only. You can buy some covers from the Chinese folks but the quality is sort of shabby and to replace the cover is hell (due to the camera).

However, you could get the Sony W700, it's another color and I think it's got the same features...

I don't know how much it'd cost, but I'd suggest this one: the Sony Ericsson W810i.

If you're willing to wait though, it isn't out yet but I'm certain it should be pretty soon, it has no buttons but I think it looks nifty as hell. The only downside to it (compared to the W series) is that it doesn't have a camera. (From what I could make out.)

Image

It's really nice looking, comes with a pen (does handwriting recognition) and is a few milimeters "fat". I think 15 MM.

Sat Jul 15, 2006 7:54 am

Thanks for the pics man, those are great looking phones, especially with the music playing capabilities. I think it will really come down to which phone is the best bang for my buck. If the Ericsson is $50 or so more than the L6 I'll probably go for the Ericsson, but if its $100+ more, I'll go with the L6.

Or maybe the L7? What do you think about those phones?

Sat Jul 15, 2006 8:50 am

What I usually do is read loads of reviews before buying anything. In certain cases, the reviews say to go against something, but I still buy it. The Nokia 8800 is a perfect example. I only bought it because I'm totally in love with it. Moral of the story is that most of the time the reviews give a good complete picture of the things you're going to buy. Only if you feel you are a 100% certain about what it is you want and are certain you won't regret what you buy, should you trust your own judgement (solely).

Basically what you need to do is prioritise. What is it you want from the phone besides the must haves. Must haves being: Calling and SMS'ing.

Do you want it to serve as a camera? Are you satisfied with so so MP quality? Do you want it to serve as your MP3 player? Do you want it to just look nifty? Ease of use? Etc etc.

I usually read review for phones on CNet and http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/. These guys are good.

I read the L6 review and frankly, despite it being an outstanding phone, I don't like the fact it only has 10MB memory space, you contacts and mailbox will take up half of that. Which leaves little room for MP3 ringtones and such. ( I don't know if it has themes, must have it.) Another thing I don't like about the phone (from the looks) is the keypad. The RAZR has the same keypad and it honestly annoys me. That's just me though.

I read the L7 review and basically it's the L6 but with exandable memory and MP3 playing capabilities. They should've just done that with the L6 but whatever. I'd suggest this one over the L6, the L6 is so basic, if you're paying a price as we now days do, pay for a "complete" phone. If you forget your MP3 player at home, you've still got music with you. Always a plus for a few bucks more.

So basically my opinion is Sony Walkman series > L7 but the L7 >> the L6.

Then it just comes down to preferance between the W series and the L7. I'm not a fan of Motorola, the designs don't speak to me and I've never been attracted to them. The W series isn't exactly eye candy either, but the looks don't annoy me as much as the Moto phones do. As I said, after that it just comes down to preferance.

The more I look at the W950i, the more I fall in love. Anyone want to buy a Nokia 8800? :P (Not in your life.)

Sat Jul 15, 2006 10:32 am

Honestly, it comes down to price for me. The L6, L7, and the Sony Ericsson W880i all look great to me, and all 3 have great reviews. However, I couldn't justify spending 100+ more for music playing capability when I already have a $250 MP3 player. If the difference is $50 I would probably go for the L7 or W880i.

I actually like the Motorola styles a lot. The Razr is a great phone IMO, but EVERYONE has one. The Slvr is such a great looking phone...I might just end up going for the L6.

Id I had $550 lying around I'd go for the Nokia 8800...but I don't :D

Sat Jul 15, 2006 11:16 am

Hehe, yeah, it's got a bit of a price tag for it's limited features. Let us know what you decide on. (Y)

Sat Jul 15, 2006 11:19 am

i have an LG u8360 and does everything i want it too, the walkman phones are prob better, a couple of mates have them and i think they have blue tooth and everything. Apparently the Motorola V975 is pretty good, if you like motorola-very stylish imo.

In his first post he says he doesn't want a flip phone though. He already has a great flip phone in the RAZR.

Sat Jul 15, 2006 11:28 am

it doesnt actually say he doesnt want a flip, but if he meant that by saying he's sick of the razr, then i'm sorry. I prefer flip for some reason  But yeah go for the sony ericson then

He says it pretty explicitly:
