WASHINGTON — The national anthem should be sung in English — not Spanish — President Bush declared Friday, amid growing restlessness over whether to grant legal status to immigrants who are in the United States illegally.

"One of the important things here is that we not lose our national soul," the president exclaimed.

A Spanish language version of the national anthem was released Friday by a British music producer, Adam Kidron, who said he wanted to honor America's immigrants.

When the president was asked at a Rose Garden question-and-answer session whether the anthem should be sung in Spanish, he replied: "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English."

President Bush hit the nail on the head here, fellas. Next thing you know the road signs will be in Spanish as well as English. I just can't take it when we hand feed those immigrants who refuse to learn our language. If you want to live, work and play here you must speak our language! I don't care if it isn't politically correct or not, it's fucking annoying and if you don't want to learn it then go back to your Spanish speaking country.

You can come here to find a better life all you want. I'm all for that, because you need to make a living for your family and everyone should have the chance to live here if they want. However, if you aren't going to put some work into adapting to our culture, which mostly means speak English, then don't come here at all. I know the American society is so freaking weak and politically correct but that doesn't mean you should get away with it. This goes for people who speak other languages, too. I'm not just pointing out Spanish-speakers, but they are the most popular here and something has to be done. I'm glad President Bush stepped up to the plate and made those comments.

:applaud: Agreed, completely.

Well, finally Bush did a right thing. I totally agree with him on this one, the official language of this nation in English, and everything should be in english. Besides, the Government should really think about spending money on putting good fences and security around the Mexican border.

I agree totally with you two. Its like in a school, you can't stay on 2 plus 2 because one kid doesn't get the damn problem. You have to help (teach english) them and integrate them eventually.

wow. bush for once does something right. nice move

That's got to be the stupidest idea ever, IMO. A national anthem in other languages? (N)

Agree with Riot.

Wow, I was just criticizing Bush earlier in the week for not being strict enough about immigration... perhaps he will prove me wrong afterall.

Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:23 pm

I believe they arrested a bunch of illegal immigrants about a week ago or so, too. They are starting to step up to the plate now.

They still need to close up those borders, though.

Um...does anyone know how the Spanish american anthem goes? It would be funny.."Jose puedes ver?"

I know it's "oh say can you see" but in elementary some guys I know used to joke it was "jose can you see"..or did they really think it was..

Sat Apr 29, 2006 3:53 pm

wow for once I can agree with Riot & Bush. Let's hope this starts a trend.

When it comes to what you do in your own home, I think as an immigrant in an English speaking country you're entitled to maintain your culture and speak your native language. But in the workplace, schools and whatnot I certainly agree that since English is the official language in the United States, it's only appropriate to learn the language and that the anthem is intended to be sung in English.

To be fair, I'm sure the Spanish version of the Star Spangled Banner isn't intended to be disrespectful and those of us in English-speaking countries do have a certain arrogance about people learning English and not having to learn a second language as countries where English isn't the official language do. But if I were moving to France for example, I'd have to learn more French than the minimal amount I remember from Year 7, no two ways about it and certainly not unfair.

Pretty much the same situation here, I mean...they are giving Turkish & Arabic at some high school's over here. On the streets you come across people that can't even speak dutch, only Turkish or Arabic.

English is unheard of, they look at you as if...what the fuck planet are you from my boy?

I'm not disagreeing with this thread, I just want to mention that our National Anthem over here in Canada can be sung in both English and French, and often is done with a meddly of both.

Sun Apr 30, 2006 3:02 pm

But in Canada you have both languages, right? In the U.S., there's only english, just like here we only speak spanish.

Sun Apr 30, 2006 3:22 pm

wow, was that main post made by me or Riot?
Couldnt tell, and couldn't agree more (Y)

Sun Apr 30, 2006 3:25 pm

Is this the first political post/topic I have made where you guys agree with me? This isn't fun. (N)

Sun Apr 30, 2006 11:39 pm

It's because it's the "new" riot posting the thread. :P

Drex, I was always under the impression that Spanish was US's second national language... mostly I think because they would always mention it and talk it on Sesame Street  If there's only English I don't see why thing's should be only in English, makes sense to me.

America is one of the few countries that does not have an offical writen language. However, everyone knows and understands that English is the language of smart people, I mean Americans.

Mon May 01, 2006 2:08 am

English is not my language, biatch :x

Mon May 01, 2006 3:50 am
