International Buy Nothing Day

Sat Nov 26, 2005 8:29 am

Have any of you heard about this? My teacher told us about this today, and it was also on the morning announcements. Apparently, this Friday (Saturday in England) you're not supposed to buy anything to compensate for the huge spending people do around Thanksgiving. WHen I heard it, I was surprised, I'd never heard about anything like this before.

Link to an article.

Personally, I think International Talk Like A Pirate day is much more fun.

That's why I refuse to go. The lines are unbelievable. Not to mention the traffic. Black Friday + snow=hell on the highways. There must have been atleast 10 crashes in a 5 mile stretch. I was forced off the road by a police officer because they had to close the road down.

INSANE.

Why would it be International Buy Nothing day to compensate for an American holiday? Guess I'll throw that in the pile with why is the American/Canadian baseball league final series called the "World Series".

Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:13 pm

Why is a game of rugby league between the two champions from the super league and nrl called the world club championship? Its becuase they are the top two tournaments. In baseball, the MLB is by far and away the best competition in the world, and the grand final is called the world series.

Sun Nov 27, 2005 12:44 am

The WCC is a one off match between 2 teams from completely different leagues, I don't necessarily think it should be called the WORLD Club Championship but regardless... the MLB isn't the only baseball league in the World, and it only involves teams from the US and Canada.

The UK and Australia are the only countries with remotely strong leagues... baseball is huge in Asia, there are multiple strong leagues over there which would constitute having a real World Series. It's not as if the MLB has a monopoly on baseball.

Sun Nov 27, 2005 3:50 am

Just like when a team wins a big league thing, they are the "World Champions".
I hate that man... :|

Sun Nov 27, 2005 3:51 am

It's mostly called the WORLD SERIES because most of the people who play are from different countries. If you are good at baseball, you come to America and play in the MLB. Most of the players go back home to their home country in the winter to be with their families.

So yeah, that's why it is called the World Series. If it was just Americans and Canadians playing then you'd have a point. However, it is a global game and people come from all over to be a part of it.

Sun Nov 27, 2005 4:52 am

Aren't the Spurs also called the "world champions"? Why dispute stuff we can't change?

That doesn't really work for me either  we have alot of foreigners playing in our soccer league, doesn't mean we call it the World Soccer League.

Sun Nov 27, 2005 6:15 am

You guys can call it whatever you want. Nobody would stop you...

Sun Nov 27, 2005 6:21 am

Soccer is much more international than Basketball & Baseball though. You'd have to have some nuts on you to go call an Australian soccer league champs "world champs".

Besides, the Brazillians would chew you up.

Sun Nov 27, 2005 6:40 am

I think there's some basketball teams in Europe who'd give alot of NBA teams a run for their money.

Sun Nov 27, 2005 8:32 am

Don't remind me, damn Tel-Aviv ...

One could argue the world series is a one off series, its played only once a year (same as the world club championship).

And Major league baseball has the best from around the world. Teams in asia have absolutely nothing compared to the MLB teams. Just think about it this way, if Houston (the second best team in the Majors) couldnt win one game out of 4 against the white sox, what chance would some little irrelivent asian team? The world series is justified becuase they are the best in the world.

It's not as if the MLB has a monopoly on baseball.

MLB has a monopoly of all the good players. There is a difference.

And they dont call it the world basketball or world baseball league either. They call the finals the world series becuase its the best teams in the world competing.

I dont. Can you imagine some isreali team trying to score on the pistons? or trying to contian duncan, ginobili, finely etc. Sure they can beat a team like the raptors, but lets be serious: the raptors are an absolute joke. There are alot of college basketball teams that could probably beat them. But wait, seeing college teams arent in the nba, does that mean that the nba finals cant even be an american championship now either becuase not every single team in america is eligible?

Sun Nov 27, 2005 1:08 pm

I seriously think a VERY, VERY GOOD Italian or Spanish basketball team would give up a nice fight against the Spurs.
