OMMFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!
Next Friday I'm getting my fuckin wisdom teeth removed!!!

I'm pretty nervious, cause I have no idea how the precedure is, and I would REALLY appreciate if people answer these questions:

How long will the procedure take (the 4 or just 2 molars)?
Does the dentist cut your gum open and use stitches to seal it up?
How long will I have to eat liquids and the like?
How many days do you miss at school/work after it?

Feedback will be greatly appreciated. :) :) :) :)

haha, Jona, i feel your pain, i already went through all that. but it was a year or 2 ago so i dont really remember exactly how long it takes till your able to eat properly again. it was about 1 or 2 weeks till everything was almost the same as before. but damn, your cheecks will swell like you got a whole apple in your mouth. i dunno what theyll do with you but for me they removed the teeth from the bones so they basically cut everything open, and yes, they use stitches to close the wound.

btw, i had some bad luck (as always). after removing the teeth and sealing up the wound they got an x-ray to check whether they removed everything properly. of course there was still a little bit of a tooth left so they had to open everything again, remove it and close the wound again. hope this doesnt happen to you.

I had mine done in the summer, I was out of commission for a week.

Mine was done in the hospital and they knocked me out so I'm not sure what it was really like in that respect. I had 4 molars and I guess they were in a pretty good position to come out, no gum cutting or whatever.

It really wasn't too bad though, people make it out to be way worse than it is and I find when people are telling me they got them removed I don't tell them I've already had mine done, and they tend to exaggerate a hell of a lot to make it sound a lot worse. Then I'm like I had it done, it's really not that bad, and they feel silly :D

I remmeber I drank a lot of pineapple juice, that stuff is supposed to heal your mouth. I didn't swell up at all, although I guess that's different for different people. I had some aspirin but it didn't even really hurt that much at all afterwards. I had prescribed percocet, but I only had it before bed on 2 nights. I guess the worst part is the eating, no solids and cold/hot stuff so it really limits your menu, but I don't remember it took that long to eat again. The other part I remember is picking out the stitches with my tongue, and pulling them out, and that hurt because they were still in my flesh and I was basically pulling right against my skin with coarse stitches :D

All in all, people get way too worked up beforehand, and make it sound a lot worse than it really is afterwards (to look cool or whatever). Just don't worry about it, it's really never that big a deal.

Oh and lol, they went to give me my knockout drug needle and it took them 4 tries to get it in the vain. 4 needles in your hand at 7 in the morning on an empty stomach isn't really fun

i just noticed that i obviously went to the wrong doctor back then... :?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 7:15 am

lol, well jona, it looks like that will be you thats in your avator.

my brother has his wisdom teeth pulled out about 2 years ago, but he only got two of them pulled (can't remember if it was on the same side or not). he said it didn't relaly hurt that bad since they gave him medicine so he couldn't really feel the pain. his mouth start hurting like hell lata on through the day and for about a couple of more days though. he had to eat bake potatoes everyday just about.

I had my wisdom teeth removed, and the so i got my name--- wisdom_kid. No the name came when i signed up for neopets, long long time ago so thats why i keep my name.

Anyway wisdom teeth really hurt but think about something you like and jus forget about the dentsit tryin to take ur teeth out. Worked for me i kept thinking about neopets.

Tue Mar 01, 2005 8:32 am

did it 3 weeks ago and it was no biggie.. it doesn't even hurt afterwards, you just bleed a little bit.. but compared to 4, i had to remove an additional 4 for braces so that = 8.. anywho, they put me under IV sedation and i woke up when they were removing my last 2 (no joke) i was aware what was going on but all i could do was clench my fist; i couldn't say anything because i was heavily dosed.. it didn't hurt that much anyways so i didn't make a big deal. overall its a pretty painless experience you'll feel some soreness but other than that it's alright.

Tue Mar 01, 2005 8:40 am

yeh same i had mine out september last year and i was in no pain i was out doin stuff straight away after the "procedure", the only thing that shitted me was the stitches coz i liked playin with em with my tongue and i probably could have done some damage or something but fortunatly everything turned out ok

Tue Mar 01, 2005 9:14 am

i kept my wisdom teeth.

good luck jona!!!

Tue Mar 01, 2005 9:16 am

I haven't had my wisdom teeth removed (yet) but from experiences with other surgeries I figure if you have a good doctor you'll be fine. I had some surgery on something in my throat about a week ago, and they said it'd keep me out a week or longer and hurt a ton, but it took me about a day to recover and didn't hurt at all. :\ Most things that get a lot of hype as being bad usually aren't all that terrible.

Tue Mar 01, 2005 9:21 am

I don't have my wisdom teeth.

I'm surprised that they didn't go over it with you already.

Anyway, I had all 4 of mine out in the summer, so I can answer these questions. The procedure takes a few hours, like 4 or 5, and it sems like longer because of the anesthetic. After its done and you go home, you usually fall asleep right away for a few more hours until it all wears off. When I had mine done, they didn't give me enough and I woke up n the middle twice and they had to give me extra.

Yes they do cut into your gums to get all o fthe toth, because they usually have to break it in half and take them out in pieces. The stitches are freaking annoying, but they usually dissolve within a week if you don't play with them enought to pull them out yourself.

You only need to avoid the solids for like the first day or two, mainly because of the anesthetic. They usually tell you to only go with liquids for a week, just so you don't knock the stitches out, but its not hard to avoid the stitches when you're chewing. Sometimes it can be harder to eat solids because if you swell up like most people do, you can't open your mouth that wide.

I had mine done on a Tuesday, and I got to stay home untl the following Monday. Sometimes it might be longer if your face is still really swollen, because it can be hard to talk, and poeple will make fun of you.

Hope that helps.

You don't. Believe me, you don't.

calm down jona2112. first of all technology today is more advance than it was 2 years ago(the time i got my wis teeth pluck out)
it wont be painful during the plucking scraping proceedure. but.... a big BUT during the anestesia thing(a 2 inch needle inserted in your gums) you will feel pain. then the operation where the dentist will cut through your gum take that not so wisdom kinda teeth away stitch the wound in place put a cotton with medicine to stop the bleeding(man did i describe that too painfully) but you wont feel a thing. well actually some grinding and cracking sounds. after you lose the wisdom teeth the other teeth will be happy and your jaw will look good almost a brad pitt feel in them. so i guess you have to have a trusted dentist on this one. the one that has all the tools and the reputations to go along with. i have my dentist a girl because they are far more good with this stuff compare to guys.
in terms of eating a few days will be soft foods then its back to normal. not much activities at first to avoid bleeding your gums again.
now goodluck :P

How long will the procedure take (the 4 or just 2 molars)? You'll be asleep and it'll be over before you know it.
Does the dentist cut your gum open and use stitches to seal it up? Not sure how, but you can feel the stitches, but don't play with it.
How long will I have to eat liquids and the like? I don't remember, but for the first couple days maybe.
How many days do you miss at school/work after it? Just miss one full day, then the next day, I think you'll be ok... it's just going to hurt a lot.

Other than the waking up part (instead of that I got 4 needle tries, lol) that's pretty much exactly me. 8 teeth in total, etc.

Wed Mar 02, 2005 12:26 pm

i took 8 out and it only took me an hour
yes the dentist cuts your gum open and stitches it up after. (the stitches disintegrate after a while)
you'll be eating liquids for a week but its no biggie, i could eat rice and soup bahaha
you can pretty much get going the next day.. the first day you're f'd up big time because you're drugged or what not but after that it's all good. it's a pretty painless experience

Wed Mar 02, 2005 12:33 pm

Don't worry about getting them taken out, you'll be drugged for the next week or so. The only thing that sucks is that eating will be a bitch for a little while after.

Wed Mar 02, 2005 12:46 pm

Just listen to some Rush before and after, you'll be fine ;)

Wed Mar 02, 2005 12:56 pm

where is jona now? i think he got his gums being stitch right at this moment
