Soccer

Mon Feb 28, 2005 4:26 pm

I want to start following this sport. I don't how to follow soccer.
Can anyone tell me who are the all good players like Ronaldinho, Zidane, Henry, Ronaldo, C Ronaldo, what team do they play for, and what league? What is the most exciting league to watch?

Tue Mar 01, 2005 4:07 am

 Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are brazilian (striker and midfielder respectively) who are VERY VERY skilled with the ball. They are both very talented soccer players like 99% of Brazilians. They play for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

 Zinedine Zidane is a brilliant french midfielder (for me the best in the world) who can score but mostly gives amazing passes. He plays for Real Madrid.

 Thierry Henry is for me the best striker right now in int'l soccer. He is french and plays for Arsenal (England). He can finish plays in the opposite goal like no one else can.

 C. Ronaldo is a portuguese youngster and plays for Manchester United. I think he is very gay, but nonetheless an amazing player.

As for the league, depends on your soccer style and taste.
If you like great defensive play and a lot of roughness watch the Italian Serie A.
If you prefer a lot of long passes and quick play watch the English Premiership. (This is the one I like most, you will NEVER see a 0 - 0 match in here!)
The Spanish La Liga is also top-notch competition.
French and German leagues are also popular, but not so much as the before mentioned.
Here in Chile we've got a pretty decent league but in the last 8 years there has been a lot of problems with money and corruption and shit. Plus the league president is an asshole (he is literally a fuckin bus driver).
Argentina has a brilliant league and Brazil also. (Y)

Hope it helps!!

Don't forget Totti from Roma[although he's arrogant and gay].Awsome player. Also Adriano from Inter.

English Premier League or they changed the name to FA or somethin. I also want to knw more about this sport. I was a soccer junkie making rosters and stuff, but when my friends werent so i stopped watching.

Tue Mar 01, 2005 11:50 am

here i get to watch the FA cup and the Italian Serie A. but i really love the Dutch league which Jona miss out. that league rules. i use to be a varsity soccer player back in my HS days and i love holland as my international team. and yes HENRY is the best striker in the enrtire soccer world right now (Y)

Tue Mar 01, 2005 12:48 pm

wow thanks all. What do all these initials stand for like FC, FA, CF?Also what are the most important tournaments other then world cup, euro? Who are more good players? Who are some of the good players of spanish league? :D

sorry for bothering but i want to learn soccer

Actually the FA (Football Association) Cup is when the First Division teams play the Second Division ones. (I'm not sure about Third).

FC -> Football Club
CF -> Club de Fútbol (the same but in Spanish)

The UEFA Champions League is pretty big (best teams in Europe) and the Copa Libertadores de América (the best teams in South America). They winner of the Champions and the winner of the Libertadores face off in the Intercontinental Cup played in Japan.

I'm tired right now and going to bed, I'll list some good players later.
Although the only ones you REALLY need to know are David Pizarro (Udinese) and Marcelo Salas (River Plate). :P

Wed Mar 02, 2005 4:21 pm

if you're in ASIA you will still love our crappy leagues
like
THE TIGER CUP
WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS
some ARAB form of champions league.

full of action/swearing/punch driven/kick in the belly/water bottle tossing action there

Wed Mar 02, 2005 9:28 pm

i couldn't stand those Asian Tiger Cups...
are they pros?
cuz they surely don' look like one..
they played like .. us .. who's good at other sports.. except soccer.. =p
they couldn't pass.. couldn't score..from .. a distance.. only like few meters away from goal post..

Thu Mar 03, 2005 3:52 pm

yep they are PROS
the best for the asian country they represent. yep they also suck
but thats not the point i watch em
its the drama
the passion
the players getting pissed off and knocking each others silly
the stupid crowds.
everything about it seems so entertaining to me

Thu Mar 03, 2005 5:28 pm

who won the Tigers cup...?
i know m'sian got into semi finals..?
i rarely see them scored..
but i did see them scoring 5-1 against ..thailand? or vietnam..
Impressive~!!

Thu Mar 03, 2005 5:33 pm

Thu Mar 03, 2005 6:12 pm

who won the Tigers cup...?

Singapore def Indonesia 2-1

yeah one time my country was beaten to hell by Japan 17-1

Associazione Calcio, that is "football association" in Italian. (Y)

Here's how it is in England:
1st Division: FA Premier League
2nd: 1st Division
3rd: 2nd Division
4th: 3rd Division
5th: Conference

At Conference stages teams are semi-pros ; but the soccer fever in England is so huge that there's still a big attendance at this stage

Fri Mar 04, 2005 8:56 pm

The FA Cup involves all the teams, and alot of teams outside the Conference aswell.. I think in the first stages of the competition it's non-league vs Conference + some Div 3, then the winners go on and play Div 2 + some Div 1 then I think they mix in the EPL teams... but yeah it's more than possible for Manchester United to play Huncote City in the FA Cup, depending on results.

In England they changed the names and shit, it goes:

Premiership (the highest division)
Championship (used to be called 1st division)
League One (was division 2)
League Two (was division 3)

I think the Conference has the same name though.

In other news, apparentely Sebastian Frey wants to leave Parma and join someone like Manchester United... they are kind of desperate for a keeper, although Tim Howard's talent just evaporated.

Fri Mar 04, 2005 10:24 pm

fuck Henry, Trezeguet's the BOMB :D

I think Totti is sorta like a T-Mac...talented but hes personality is truly fuzzered up (n)

the EPL is sorta the shorten form for the Premier League....but its actual title is

FA BARCLAY CARD PREMIERSHIP

Jae's course said that ^...

Most exciting league...well it depends on what time of football u like...if u like defensive lock down football then its Serie A(Italy).....if u like flare then La Liga(Spain) is prolly the best choice n the south american leagues r full of flare too but they dont have alotta TV coverage outside the region.....The Premiership though is prolly the best mix....plus its prolly got the best coverage and drama around it....it has a more exciting feel to it...

n yeah wtf happend to Tim Howard....hes completely disappeared...n now Roy Carroll is having probs too...Man U need a Keeper real quick...

Chelsea seem to be faltering of late....I think their gonna just win the premiership only to go along with the Carling Cup...but ECL is outta the frame now.....

Sir Bobby has apparently told Mourinho to grow up and stop being such a arrogant bastard

man I truly miss Sir Bobby, I dont like Soueness at all...........BRING BACK SIR BOBBY !!!!

n Jona's rite... Cristiano Ronaldo looks like a homo....but hey so does alotta footballers....but he annoys the heck outta me with his damn 1-2 dribbles...

n if u wanna be a fan of this sport......address it as FOOTBALL.... :P

Jae™ wrote:but yeah it's more than possible for Manchester United to play Huncote City in the FA Cup, depending on results.

It's possible, but the probability is pretty low as if we consider Huncote as a team in 6th division (lower than Conference), then Huncote shall pass 3 rounds where they could meet teams in higher division before Manchester enters the competition. So it's possible but it doesn't happen a lot :)

The League Cup is like the FA Cup (a lot of people say it's just redundant), but only with teams in the first four divisions.

Sat Mar 05, 2005 12:40 am

Yeah I think the League Cup is a bit of a joke, it's only redeeming factor is that the winner gains a place in Europe. As far as Huncote goes, I was just using that as an example of the fact that it's not just Div 1 teams and such in the FA Cup

EPL is popular than spanish or italian football.. i suppose..
cuz they did alot of promotion on that.. on tv etc..
dats why most of the matchers were almost over crowded..

but top teams in EPL are full of oversea players..
not many good english players left in the top team...
i support chelsea.. like 3 years ago.. b4 billionaire took over..
Frank Lampard.. n John Terry.. were already there...
but chelsea signed quite a few ..good english players..

Sat Mar 05, 2005 8:33 am

Sebastian Frey is one of my favorite goalkeepers EVER. Hope he goes to a decent team. 8-)

Sat Mar 05, 2005 12:01 pm

Chelsea have signed good British Talent, but they just dump them into the reserves... Scott Parker was supposed to be the "next big thing" in England, now he struggles to get into the Chelsea squad (mainly due to injury but still).

Lampard wasnt this good till Abrahamovich took over...he was ok but never the star class player he is now....

I think Chelsea need two defenders(specially a left back) n they'll be solid....but still even with the load of foreign talent they have they still find space for locals unlike Arsenal.....Arsenal has only Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell(whose injured 24/7) to represent the homeland...its kinda sad...

yeah Scott Parker's totally disappeared...I think someone should buy him..maybe Middlesborough or Tottenham...a team where he'll get to play....

most impressive english youngsters(besides Rooney) currently r Stuart Downing, Jermaine Jenas, James Milner n prolly Sean Wright-Phillips....I think Downing could turn out be a key player on the english team...hes a very solid player...not too flashy but just plays flat out hard.

Sat Mar 05, 2005 9:58 pm

Sean Wright-Phillips just got injured, but I honestly think he'll be the best English footballer in the World within 5 years... his talent is just unlimited.
