The little things that piss you off (Pre-Podcast Discussion)

Postby Leftos on Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:54 pm

Vent all your first-world problems. Your pet peeves. The most minute things that still manage to ruin your day somehow. The things that make you seem like a complete lunatic to all those around you, just because they can't accept their own lunacy and take you in as one of their own.

I promise to make fun of the most ridiculous stuff posted here, and embarrass myself as well.

I guess a pet peeve of mine is seeing people share shit on Facebook that's overly bigoted, particularly when you have them added out of some kind of obligation (like, they're a part of your extended family). Or even the slacktivists that post shit like "like this status message if you think cancer sucks".

Honestly, there's a lot of little things on social media that manage to ruin my day somehow

Inconsistent coworkers who seem to be able to finish when the manager is working but slack off when I'm covering for them, resulting in me having to help the coworkers finish which puts me behind and causes the manager to play catch up when they come back to work.

badreligionau, yeah, I've grown to the point where I don't feel obligated to be a friend of anyone on Facebook, but even so, thank god that "Hide" works nicely and I don't get any of the stupid ones I haven't removed in my news feed. Hah, "news feed". And by the way, I'm not touting my own horn, plenty of friends have hidden me from their feeds because of stuff I post (my perverted nature doesn't work that well with their puritanism, I guess), so there. It goes both ways, it works brilliantly.

Oh my, yes. It even happens with good friends who you get along fine with but there's a particular belief they hold or issue they have some funny ideas about.

I think I only hate it when people use it incorrectly. I remember catching an episode of the Biggest Loser once and one of the contestents said "it's literally do or die". That annoys the hell out of me. But koberulz used it in the way it's meant to be used, so that doesn't annoy me as much. Although, he did quote me out of context, which is a pet peeve in itself

I think it's a fairly safe assumption that 'people who post shit on Facebook' would generally not be taken literally unless otherwise specified. At least I'd hope so.

It's gotten to the point where society has more or less accepted the incorrect usage of the word, not unlike "ironic" and the non-standard word "irregardless".

(As if to illustrate the latter, Chrome's spell-check apparently doesn't consider irregardless a mistake.)

Definition of LITERALLY

1
: in a literal sense or manner : actually <took the remark literally> <was literally insane>
2
: in effect : virtually <will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice — Norman Cousins>
See literally defined for English-language learners »
See literally defined for kids »
Usage Discussion of LITERALLY

Since some people take sense 2 to be the opposite of sense 1, it has been frequently criticized as a misuse. Instead, the use is pure hyperbole intended to gain emphasis, but it often appears in contexts where no additional emphasis is necessary.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/literally

literally
Use Literally in a sentence
lit·er·al·ly [lit-er-uh-lee] Show IPA
adverb
1.
in the literal or strict sense: What does the word mean literally?
2.
in a literal manner; word for word: to translate literally.
3.
actually; without exaggeration or inaccuracy: The city was literally destroyed.
4.
in effect; in substance; very nearly; virtually.
Origin:
1525–35; literal + -ly

Can be confused: figuratively, literally, virtually (see usage note at the current entry).

Usage note
Since the early 20th century, literally has been widely used as an intensifier meaning “in effect, virtually,” a sense that contradicts the earlier meaning “actually, without exaggeration”: The senator was literally buried alive in the Iowa primaries. The parties were literally trading horses in an effort to reach a compromise. The use is often criticized; nevertheless, it appears in all but the most carefully edited writing.

That actually reminds me of something else that's pissed me off over the Summer. We were bombarded by KFC ads with Joel and Benji Madden. The funny thing is, members from Good Charlotte previously did a PETA protest against KFC for their treatment of chickens. The ads Status Quo have been doing for Coles have been pretty hideous too.

Bandwagoning fans piss me off. Those fans are the main reason I had a particular dislike for the Lakers, which has died down significantly ever since the rise of the Miami Heat.

EDIT: And to add to the social media pet peeves, I also hate Facebook posts involving "Like for this", and if you ignore, there's a terrible consequence involved. Especially when religion is involved in these types of posts.

I'm one of those guys who still drink instant coffee. So you wake up groggy, go get a teaspoon, open the coffee can, fill the teaspoon up, and the moment you go to drop the coffee into your cup, you ever so slightly knock the spoon on the rim of the cup, and the coffee goes FUCKING EVERYWHERE. Some miracle physics are in force every time there. I'm sure of it.
