Disney has just confirmed that it has agreed to acquire George Lucas‘ Lucasfilm Ltd, and that includes rights to the Star Wars franchise that will now continue on. The companies have targeted a 2015 release for Star Wars: Episode 7, with Episode 8 and Episode 9 to follow as the the long-term plan is to release a new feature every two or three years. “The last Star Wars movie release was 2005’s Revenge Of The Sith – and we believe there’s substantial pent-up demand”, Disney said. The deal also includes rights to the Indiana Jones franchise.

No doubt a lot of folks are up in arms about that one. They've got a lot to draw upon with the Expanded Universe, so the opportunity is there to make films worth watching I guess.

George Lucas sold his soul to the devil.
I'm a die hard Star Wars fan and my eyes (JarJar), ears (JarJar) and heart (JarJar) bleeded when I first saw Episodes I & II. Episode II was something like "Sissi" in Space with partially real bad actors (Hayden Christensen) and just a few good scenes (most of them featured either Yoda, Samuel L. Jackson or Jango Fett).
I think those movies won't have much in common with the original trilogy and will be more like The Clone Wars or crap like that.
Well it can't get much worse then Indy 4.

Wouldn't that be for the best, then? The original trilogy and the prequels would stand on their own, with the new stuff standing apart and not looking to rewrite or reimagine them.

As long as George Lucas had the last word on what belongs to the original saga and what is just fan fiction/ expanded universe, it was way better to block some influences.
Example given: There's a series of Star Wars books that feature super biotic force immune villains and Han Solo's son becoming a Sith Lord, that are really crappy and really don't have much in common with the original story, which is basically just the tale of Anakin Skywalker.

Supposedly he'll still be around as a creative consultant, so presumably he'll see fit to veto certain stuff while pushing for other things.

I hope you're right about that.

This sounds like another mission for the South Park creators.

Yeah, wouldn't surprise me if they at least reference it in their finale, or it's one of the first things they mention next season.

I think this is great, I can't wait to see a different director's take on Star Wars.

I'm glad JJ Abrams is involved. It would be cool if he used elements from 'The Thrawn Trilogy' and introduced Mara Jade.

Maybe being able to work on the actual franchise will let him stop trying to force another into being it.
