I hate #SOPA as much as everyone else, but you don't need Wikipedia to write your school papers. #FUCKSOPA

All these students freaking out and they can just use Google or search their school library search engine for peer-reviewed journals. SOPA is ridiculously stupid, it'll take a ton of NBA highlights from the 80's and stuff off Youtube, but students complaining about Wikipedia being down is just stupid.

Wouldn't that be the way to go anyway? I'm assuming most schools wouldn't accept Wikipedia as a legitimate source.

Oh, absolutely. Of course, if it's simply time folks want to while away, there's always TV Tropes.

It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services. It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.

Remember what the MPAA says: horrific violence is OK, as long as no one uses any dirty words.

They're protecting us from the evil corporate interests of Wikipedia!

Have you seen "This Film is Not Yet Rated"?

For every single high school research paper I had no interest in, I just paraphrased the Wikipedia article, recited most of their sources, then surfed the web for a few useless ones of my own and was good to go.

SOPA is bad though. If Barack lets this go through, I'll have to vote for that veto guy.

^Exactly. If you really want to use Wikipedia today just refresh the page with the refresh button and then stop it from loading. It seems like a lot of people are coming up with these complex ways to access Wikipedia when they could do it in a few seconds this way.

yeah I have. A long time ago though but I remember a lot of their rating tactics seemed unfair to people who make movies as their art. They force them to alter so many things in their movies just so the movie does not get a mature rating that it doesnt even reflect the artist's original intention. The audience of the movie decreases a lot depending upon the more mature ratings so basically the random people they have deciding on the rating get to alter the revenue of the movie. IIRC the panel who rates the movie seemed too uptight based on their religion or background

Zuckerburg owns Wikipedia? I guess you learn something new everyday.

He doesn't, but I guess it's appropriate given the common criticisms of Wikipedia's accuracy. [citation needed]

MegaUpload got done under DMCA, not SOPA. Along with racketeering and money laundering charges.
