New Mortal Kombat movie coming from MK Legacy director

Article.

Did you like Kevin Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series? New Line Cinema evidently did, as it's hired Tancharoen to direct a new film based on the bloody franchise. So, to sum up, that one self-produced "Rebirth" short got Tancharoen a job first as a web series director, and now on a feature film. The movie will reportedly feature a more "realistic" version of the Mortal Kombat characters, like the dead ninja who controls fire and the monk with the razor-sharp hat.

I did enjoy the series (though I'm still a bit iffy on the Raiden episode), so I'd say this could be one to look out for.

I've got the ones from the 90s on DVD, they're guilty pleasures. I'd say this new one won't be nearly as cheesy though.

I enjoyed the web shorts, but I'm not really sure how you can make a "gritty, realistic" Mortal Kombat movie to be honest. Mortal Kombat isn't exactly known for it's riveting plot lines, and what will ultimately get people into theatres for this film is boatloads of fanboy service. Most of the more bad ass aspects of Mortal Kombat that people want to see (ex: Scorpion) aren't exactly great vehicles to deliver a "realistic" experience.

And no, I do not count dimming the lighting and having everyone speaking in raspy voices with brooding postures (aka the short films) as making something "gritty" or "edgy".

I took it to mean "realistic" rather than realistic, if that makes sense. That probably means they'll strip some of the sillier and contrived elements of the MK canon but there's still going to be magic/supernatural elements in the movie. Otherwise, it's not Mortal Kombat.

As a huge Raiden fan, 'Iffy' is putting it mildly for me on that one. I actually like the story idea for that episode, definitely a fresh, unexpected angle for Raiden, but it's the execution and the cast that made me :facepalm2: .Raiden's human form is supposed to be a strong, charismatic looking human male of indeterminable race, not that lily white, shady looking man. :turrible:

The premise was interesting but to me that episode came off as a fairly generic attempt at being dark and edgy.
