Do you keep or sell your old games/consoles?

Postby Andrew on Wed Jan 05, 2011 8:07 pm

This article on Kotaku reminded me of a topic I've been meaning to create, especially since we've had a few threads talking about our all-time favourite games and old favourites that we'll still play, frequently to this day or just every now and then.

As the thread title asks: Do you keep or sell your old games/consoles?

I tend to be a bit of a collector when it comes to my old games and consoles, though I don't actively try to expand my old collections and I don't have shelves and shelves of games for a single console, as someone like James Rolfe does. Rather, I've kept my old consoles along with the games I wanted to keep and just stored them away as I've bought a new, latest generation console. I have sold/traded in games before but in some cases I've actually gone out and picked them up cheap off eBay or wherever down the track so that I can go back and play them if the mood strikes. Generally speaking though, if it's a game I think I'll want to play again down the road, I prefer to keep it rather than trade it in for a new game or put it up on eBay.

As far as consoles are concerned, I've still got an Intellivision, NES, SNES, N64 and PS2 and a decent amount of games for each; enough for a nostalgic afternoon every once in a while. They're all stored away except the PS2 though, which I've still used infrequently since getting my 360.

I've got a mate or two who have kept all going back to SNES.

As for me, the answer is no. Once I get a new console, I tend to either trade in my old one with games or sell it. I try not to get in the habit of hoarding (I know it's not hoarding for a lot of people), so if I don't use it now & won't anytime in the foreseeable future then I don't need it around, so it's gone).

Sometimes memories are better left that way. My favourite game of all-time is NBA Live '95. I don't think firing up an old Sega Mega Drive (Genesis for the Americans) is going to be good for my memories. I like my happy memories to be untarnished wherever possible :P

i still have my nes boxed up at my mom's and the snes set up over there even though i never play it. just nice to know it's still there since it provided me 1000s of hours of entertainment for me when i was younger. my ps1 i gave to my mom's cousin when i got my ps3. i think my ps2 is somewhere at my mom's but i have no iea. i got my ps2 games here with me since my ps3 (which broke recently) played them but i never played them anyways. they aren't worth anything if i sell em so ill probably wind up keeping em.

I still have my old Colecovision(w/tracball, driving module, super action controllers, Atari 2600 adapter), Atari 7800, Sega Genesis/32X, PS2. Selling them is not an option. Shit, I still play my PS2 games as much as PS3.

I keep them. Have only been gaming since PS1, so none of my games have any real value.

Still have my NES, Genesis, and Dreamcast. Will still fire up all of them every once in a blue moon.

I dont sell anything usually. Selling used is a rip off to me and since I've always been pretty selective when it comes to buying physical games I dont usually want to sell anything.

Atari/SNES/N64 are in my mom's basement. She's tried selling them on me before so I hid them. I didn't take them with me when I moved out since I will usually go the emulator route when I need my retro fix and it is nice when I go home to hook in the SNES and play some Super Mario World with my sister.
Opinions are my own.

We prefer the term "collectors". :P

Definitely much easier than dragging out the consoles and hooking everything up.

Do you guys find the old console work on new TV's, or do you have to pull out an old CRT or even older tube TV to run them?

I'm still getting by with a CRT TV, so it's a non-issue for me.

I have no problem playing "old" games on a new TV

It'll probably be my next "big" purchase, after paying some bills and putting aside a little money.

Fair enough. I've only got a 26" LCD but have put off buying a good, big one for last couple of years due to other more pressing items. It'll probably be pushed back another couple of years more (N)

I wouldnt call it hoarding x. I tended to catch things either way after their prime (got my genesis the year playstation/saturn came out) or the system i chose didnt catch on (i remember having a long debate trying to decided between a dreamcast and ps2..I didnt trust sony..I was in 8th grade at the time but still). This being the case, trade in value on the games/system are next to nothing and to me i'd rather just keep it since it mostly still works than sell it for 20 cents. Its not like i go on ebay and buy games for it now, i just play what i acquired while i had the system and leave it at that
